What is RAID and How many types of them are there?

Hello All,

I have done some research on RAID and I am still not sure what they are/do.
What are the benefits of RAID and is the higher the RAID the better.
Kinda need a guide for dummies because I am stumped.

raid from 0 upto 5 i think,in raid it shares/writes data accross all the disks,if one hdd fails you lose all your data (raid0) raid 5 isnt as fast as raid0 but it backs up the data i think not sure on that though
