What is raid?

So i have seen a lot of people on these forums talk about RAID 0 and RAID 1 or something like that. And i was wondering if anyone could just outline what it is for/what it does etc.

it stands for Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks

RAID 0 is where you have two drives working togethor as one big drive, but with two "inputs/outputs" so it's quicker basically. The data is spread out over two drives. Hard to explain.

RAID 1 is where you have two drives, and the one drive automatically backs up the other drive.
