What is the best CPU for £100 or less??

I am in the process of putting a spec together for my brother and kind of stuck right out the gates on what CPU to go for.

The PC will be used simply for browsing the net, using Adobe Illustrator and capable of playing 1080P Blurays (so IGP is a must), but I want it to be pretty snappy in operation when paired with an SSD.

I was thinking of going for something like an AMD A10-5800K but not entirely sure how snappy it would be for my needs - should I be looking at something else that would suit my needs better??

If you want snappy response to opening programs make sure you get an SSD! I would hate to run my operating system on a regular hard drive now that I'm used to the speed and responsiveness of my SSD. :)

Hiya thanks for the input guys - an SSD is going to be a must for this build as is integrated graphics.

So what I really want is best single thread performance (may also overclock the cpu if at all possible) along with IGP that can play 1080p faultlessly - I want the best of those two for a budget of about £100??

That's exactly what I'd get. The integrated graphics is very strong.

OP is not gaming though, and that CPU ain't gonna help much on improving the responsiveness. He'd better off with a dual-core with higher IPC and a SSD than putting the same budget toward a A10-5800K (plus the extra cost on HDD).

I am actually leaning towards just getting an i5 2500K and clocking it - if I can pick one up for £100 it looks like the best bet even though it is total overkill ...:D

OP sounds like the SSD is a given, the question is which CPU for £100. The answer is the 5800K.

For non-gaming the £30 cheaper A8-5600K is just as good, the only difference is a slightly weaker GPU and a 200MHz decrease in stock clock. But it can be overclocked if needed.

I would get the A8 5600K for around £70 to £75 . Some retailers bundle a Sim City voucher too which can be sold for between £15 to £20 on Ebay. After the Ebay fees,it will essentially knock the price down to be around £55 to £65.

Many of the applications which comprise CS6 can use upto 4 cores, and Adobe is rolling out OpenCL acceleration for parts of the suite too.

OcUK are also selling this SSD for only £35 too:

Hence you could probably just about do an SSD and CPU for around £100.
