Hello guys,

I've never really played an mmo a quick go on WOW thats about it. Whats the best free to play mmo, I dont have a lot of time to put into it IE no time to get the best gear so I'm looking for a game I can play on and off just casual fun.

This might sound crazy, but I'd see WoW through to the end with their free trial / welcome back promotions. The levelling experience is still pretty good and it will give you a good impression of the MMO genre as a whole. I think if most people that play MMOs could turn back the clock and play WoW again as a fresh experience, they probably would, even after all the updates and expansions.

Star Wars the Old Republic. A good chunk is free, plenty if you don't spend a lot of time gaming anyway. And you can always add some of the paid features (extra character slots, bigger inventory etc) with one off payments.

I'd probably say tera tbh. The combat is insanely fun and challenging and so is the PvP, only bad thing is the level is a bit of a grind, quests get repetitive but the combat is worth it. Another would be rift. Played rift for a while and found it to be fun, its on steam too which is easier.

Raiderz just released on steam yesterday too which is similar to tera and apparently a lot like monster hunter, but the antihack is a pile of **** and stops chrome from working so cba playing it.

If you want totally free, Rift is probably best or try WoW to L20 for free.
Box price, I'd go for The Secret World which can be had for under a tenner and is quite different to the bulk of high fantasy based MMO's out there.

Another vote for Rift here. Very little need to ever spend money on it if you don't want to, and a bit more lively than your average theme park, with the rifts and invasions. Character class system is excellent too.

Also if, and only if, you have a regular group of friends to play with, D&D Online. It's basically all instanced dungeons, but some of them are really well done, and the multiclassing possibilities are insane. Makes you pay after a while though, not one of the better F2P implementations.

Runescape, TERA or Path of Exile get huge +1s from me, wouldn't touch RIFT with a barge pole but if you want the genuine cope and paste WoW experience for free then go ahead.

I say spend £20 and get Guild Wars 2 or The Secret World, both are awesome.

I tried a few free MMOs a few months ago.

I spent a week on RIFT and thought it was quite good, spent a few hours looking up HUD items etc (just like on WoW). Got it all setup & played it for a week but got really bored of it :(

Then I tried TERA and I think I played that for a month, really liked how it was a bit different and quirky, I really liked the control system.
I just got bored after a month, not really sure why.

I also downloaded neverwinter and played it for a few days :(

I had previously tried DDO and thought it was a bit dated

(if you don't mind paying for a game with no subscription) Guildwars2 is pretty good if you get into the control style but I just didn't like the way the weapons were setup etc :( (hold sword or dagger and do long range attacks with it)
I was really disappointed with GW2 but only really because I hoped it would be like the original GuildWars (miss the cross building, skill tree, autoattacking etc etc)

I also gave EVE Online a go with a free 21day pass, I thought it was nice and different but as time went on large aspects of it seemed more spreadsheets online and I went back to X3 AP

Path OF Exile seems really good also (I have only really played it for 18hours)

I guess it depends on what you are into

I'm just curious if anyone's ever played AION?

I'm not a big MMORPG fan but I did like this game, although in the grand scheme of things it's probably terrible, I wouldn't know.

GW 2, Rift, LoTRO, Secret World is what everyone I use to play is now playing :) Except for a few die hards who are on the DAOC free dodgy pirate server lol
