First Class is kind of a retroactive prequel given the way later films linked it to the others. Batman Begins is definitely not a prequel.

Red Dragon is a remake of Manhunter (1986) which is a better movie even though it does not have Hopkins.
Its actually based on the novel, not strictly a remake of manhunter (manhunter was also based on the novel) - I agree that manhunter is the better film - then again Silence of the Lambs is overrated

If we’re ignoring the novels and just sticking with the films, then I would say Red Dragon is a good shout. But it is cheating a bit as @C Kent says.

It does.
The Thing(2011) is the absolute definition of a prequel if you ask me, and it does have some of the same characters, mainly the thing itself. I think I've only ever seen it once, but I remember it did do some goods things to link in to the prior film to explain how things got like they did, the spilt face dude for a start, that was pretty cool.
Also I had no idea about the TGTBATU being the first film. I always assume him finding the poncho at the end was a knowing call back to the first film.

The Thing (2011) is genuinely quite good but ruined with unnecessary CGI which was forced upon them for some reason.
Yeah, oddly enough the Man with No Name films are actually, chronologically back to front, so the first film was actually the latest and the last film was the earliest....in terms of timeline, Good , Bad and Ugly is earliest, Few Dollars More is next , Fistful of Dollars is last.... 1863 for Good,Bad,Ugly. 1873ish for Few Dollars More and 1875ish for Fistful of Dollars.

Definitely the thing 2011 for me. The thing being such an iconic film with a very special feeling when you watch it that first time, and they somehow recreated it 30 years later with some great bits of continuity too. Making me want to rewatch it now.

Thought of another one, Ouija: Origins of Evil. A surprisingly good prequel to a crappy horror film. In fact there are a few good horror prequels. Saw X was quite good.

Similar sentiments to those already posted - prequels are rarely as good as the earlier entries. Some I thought of which are worth watching:
