They are sequels aren't they? What's Titanic 2? Can't work out if that is a joke post
Vincent has made it a bit tricky to pick any really, but I would agree with the posters that said The Thing prequel makes a good stab at it. Rogue One was also a good suggestion, but I think the few characters from the films set after aren't in it very long? so not sure it would count? But I've only seen that movie once.

Tremors 2 was a continuation, just a bit further up the valley.
ST 2 was so dire that people attempt to forget it, the original ST cast returned for ST3 and approached it tongue in cheek again so it works - a continuation of ST -> ST3 basically.
Titanic 2 was a joke
But I read it as sequel not prequel.
I always thought Shape of Water was a pre-cursor in the discovery of Abe Sapien that went on to be in Hellboy but no supposedly.
