one of my storage drives, currently a 1tb needs something bigger. so what is the current sweet spot for hdds? im thinking its 4TB but figured id ask because i just dont keep up on these things like i used to.

oh and speed doesnt matter at all, id prefer low noise and low power consumption as the most taxing thing they will ever do is play HD video files

How much storage do you need?
erm well what i really need is a larger than 1tb for the music drive and i cycle in the bigger drive and move a current storage drive that 2tb into the music storage role. so im really thinking 4 but i did see some segate external drive that was 8tb but i saw some rather negative things about it, so..... really im just after whatever size represents the best value for money at the moment. 4tb for circa 100 seemed fairly good?

Depends on personal requirements, I have two ancient 250gb spin drives (mirrored) so effectively 250gb for music, they are full.
A 620gb spin drive for general download /storage.

And a 250gb SSD system drive that's basically an OS and 3 or 4 games.

Last time i looked it was around 3/4Tb drives.

Would have been quicker to work out yourself. i.e. price per Gb = Drive Cost / Total Raw Storage.

Example, OCUK sells the red WD 4Tb for £135.95. So £135.95 for 4096 Gb (Raw Storage) = £0.0331p / Gb
OCUK sells the red WD 3Tb for £107.99. So £107.99 for 3072 Gb (Raw Storage) = £0.0351p / Gb
OCUK sells the Seagate 10Tb for £359.99. So £359.99 for 10240 Gb (Raw Storage) = £0.0351p / Gb

So the 4Tb is best value for money, and the cheapest 10Tb drive is on par with the 3Tb WD Red.

I have ran 4tb as a main storage drive since the 4770k came out.

These days I still think thats a fair size for general storage. I store plenty of photos, uncompressed music and movies though and do sometimes go through the drive to delete unused files and save space.

I use a 250gb OS SSD drive and 960gb Games SSD drive. With a back up external 4tb drive and 1tb drive.

With game downloads getting bigger having a game drive saved a large chunk of OS and storage drive space.

Location
Norrbotten, Sweden.
Os on M2
2 game ssds and a 1tb HDD and most media stuff I store on a 2tb usb3 HDD on the network.

I used to keep tons of music but with Spotify I rarely even load an MP3. Not for months...

I'd probably look at 3 or 4tb for a storage drive now.
