What is the spec that affects screen brightness from different viewing angles?

I have a LG L1710B TFT PC monitor and want to buy a LCD HDTV next year...

This TFT is awful at contrast/brightness from different viewing angles.

For example if I look at the monitor standing up looking down it looks quite bright, when I sit down and look from lower the brightness is different and dark scenes on dvds are hard to watch.

I was just wondering if this problem occurs with LCD HDTVs...

...and what is the spec on specification details that is/are responsible for this?

Thanks for any help.

theres no real connection, just because you have an LCD monitor with poor viewing angles, doesnt mean its going to occur on a HD TV, as so many LCD monitors these days have good viewing angles, let alone LCD tvs used in the living room.

its not a spec on the specification as such, its usually a sign of a cheap panel.

But on the other hand, some types of panel have better viewing angles than others. The newer S-PVA panels (as found in newer sony's, samsungs's, pansonic's etc..) have better viewing angles than the PVA and especially the much cheaper MVA type found in cheaper LCD tvs.
