i find shortcuts with blank names better, that way you dont need gdesklets running all the time

but thats just personal preference

Or get the build tools, download the source, set up the compiler optimization flags, then go for a ./configure && make && make install

I'll let you off with that one as it doesn't download binaries, however I don't use gentoo and my way will work on (almost) all distros.
