what is this component?

Ah yeah, you're right.

The chassis intrusion header is that tiny thing to the left of it.

"BIOS configuration jumper block" then?

I'm almost positive it's what I said it was, what it gets used for is another story, but it's not uncommon for mobos to have crystals on them.

If you look closely at the component you can see something that looks like it could be one of these things inside the plastic cover:

That is a 32.768 kHz Crystal, and this thing here is something I've seen on loads of different motherboards, which is also a 32.768 kHz Crystal.

I'd be interested in knowing what they do though.

But a BIOS configuration jumper block doesn't look anything like the component shown in the pic the OP posted...

A jumper block consists of pins doesnt it, for clearing CMOS and whatnot?

There are no pins in sight on that component.

I'm wondering if the config jumper block is behind the red arrow in the OP's pic?

You can see that there is something under the top red arrow.

In the diagram you've posted the config jumper is directly below the SATA ports, that component is to the right of them, the thing under the red arrow is more where the jumper is in the diagram you've posted.

After looking more closely the OP's pics seem to be of 2 different boards. If you look @ the SATA ports the 2 pairs are in different positions relative to each other which isn't helping if they aren't pics of the same board.

Personally I think the best thing to do would be to contact Intel themselves, though I'm still pretty sure that it's a crystal of some description...

The pics are not of the same board just the same component on an Intel D945 board, I couldn't find a good pic of the actual D945GCZ.

I am inclined to think it is the crystal too but why have it in the odd shape plastic case and why are so many of the ones i've seen opening up.

Do you think Intel would bother getting back to me? it's not a board that's going to be under warranty.

I just remembered I think I have a faulty board in the office, I could cut the component off and investigate.

i dont mean to pry here but why are you concerned as to what it actually is , is the board faulty ? or am i missing something i should have read earlier up

What is the brand og motherboard, that component has nothing to do with the chipset itself. I would expect it to be a temp sensor of some kind. Find the Model and make of Mobo.
