and does likeing it mean I am offically old and sad?

Train
Counting Crows
Maroon 5*

These days I find myself quite comfortable listening to these band generally tapping my foot and singing along whilst smoking a pipe wearing tartan slippers. I have a horrible feeling that someone is going to tell me its MOR or AOR.

There was a time in my life when I would rather have been caught with 'horse pr0n' than anything which could possibly be considered MOR or AOR :o

I think I must be getting old :(

BTW if there are any other sad old farts who like the same things then suggest some more similar bands for me here, or if you would prefer to remain anonamous then you can email me at i_like_dadrock@sad_old_bugger.com, scratch that, just use the email in my trust ;)

I've also been known to break out the Genesis, Yes and Fleetwood Mac from time to time but I'm having trouble bringing myself to admit it in full size font :o

I hate to say it but i too have some weird taste!

Ive been listening to James Blunt, and listen to Tracey Chapman LOL

Well I have very eclectic taste, in front of me I have; Maroon 5, Train, Travis, Editors, Sigur Ros x2, Jose Gonzalez, Pink Floyd, Anthony and the Johnsons, Groove Armada, Gorrilaz, White Stripes, Kirsty McColl and Counting Crows.

The thread is kinda tounge in cheek, but this genre does seem to be increasing in my listening time. What I was really after was some recomendations of similar bands :)

Get a bit of Crowded House in there! I seem to have a rather definitive dividing line when it comes to the sort of music you're talking about - Crowded House and Travis fall on one side of it, Maroon 5 and James Blunt are on the other. I think it comes down to the lyrics; where the former bands I mentioned feel like modern-day poets, the latter seem to be trite and dreary. Nowt wrong with a bit of Genesis either. :)

so that's what it feels like when someone goes down in your estimation :(;)

at the OP...those bands are just American Rock music. no special generalisation about them. Bands like The Goo Goo Dolls and Nickelback fit in there as well. it's just that kinda middle-of-the-road Rock music, it's not hurting anyone, and it's not doing anything groundbreaking. fun to listen to sometimes! (aside from Train)

now i want to listen to Nickelback...:(

Hmmmmm I'd say Nickleback are quite a bit heavier than Train and Counting Crows? Unless they've changed a lot recently, shame musicplasma is down at the moment otherwise I could have a nose on there :(

Just have a browse on Amazon then, clicking on "People who bought this also bought". It's effectively the same thing, just takes a little longer.

Going back and listening to songs like 'Jesus He Knows Me' (a snide dig at TV preachers), I feel a lot of people don't credit the work he did with Genesis simply because it's Phil Collins.

In the words of Patrick Bateman:

"Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds. (Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it.) But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite." :)

Nickelback have their moments...i guess they are a bit heavier, but i'd still group them together.

Carzy, luckily for me, i dont worry about whether the music i listen to is going to effect my image as a music snob...so Nickelback are still ok for me! :p

Belmit, i was only joshing with you. someone says genesis, you hear Phil Collins. i actually really like the "we can't dance" album. Dreaming While You Sleep is definitely in my top 50 songs of all time.

I just know someone is going to suggest the holy gail of Dad Rock

Neither do I, I have Amerie, Avril Lavigne, Bon Jovi and Justin Timberlake albums on my computer to name but a few.

Nickelback on the other hand, are just dire :p You seen the video where they are playing in Portugal getting booed majorly, and someone throws a bottle at Chad's head, and it whacks him on the back of his head?

That is comedy. :D

I never quite understood why Genesis kept their name after Peter Gabriel left. Sometimes it works - Pink Floyd with or without Roger Waters for example was still the same genre. With Genesis however difference between Gabriel's Genesis and Collins' Genesis was almost as ridiculous as if New Order kept name of Joy Division after Ian Curtis died or as if Malcolm McLaren decided to cast Abba as continuation of Sex Pistols. Genesis with Collins was far more successfull but somehow it managed to wipe out memory of what once was the true genesis of perhaps the best era in history of 20th century rock. Without Gabriel's Genesis there would be no progressive or conceptual rock.

Oh god, I thought the mention of Nickelback was bad, but Bon Jovi? Urgh, I feel dirty just writing that name. To think I felt embarassed by owning a Lit CD, that's positively the coolest thing ever compared to some of the names here. :p

yeah, you'd probably like Lifehouse if you like Train and CC. they're pretty good, but not really my cup of tea. my ex-boss was obsessed with them, so they must be doing something right for someone!

i guess it's pretty lucky for me that music's pretty subjective then :p
