What is white privilege?

My leg up was the fact I could afford to work as an apprentice for £80 a week to get into the industry I wanted to work in. If I couldn't afford that, I wouldn't be where I am now. Probably working as low skilled labour or in retail (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Yeah, and this is another issue here.

That I care about eradicating race based inequality doesn't mean I'm not equally concerned about wealth inequality and how we help those born into poverty more.

The problem is, more people can empathise with being poor so it's an easier sell politically.

It has to be labelled to discuss it.

Black disadvantage is no better than white privilege, and arguably worse in its implication that the problem is with black people, it's not, it's with white society in majority white countries.

Of course in other countries there will be Arab Privilege or Black Privilege.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't aspire to be better, especially given those who deny white privilege, by implication, think they are better.

This is part of the issue for me. "White privilege" in the sense that I am advantaged as a white person exists but, like "White Silence = Violence", it puts the blame squarely and entirely at the foot of someone else, white society, when in my opinion it is not that one sided. In the wake of the George Floyd murder many sources popped up suggesting that it wasn't necessarily the case but I am loathe to go digging around that particular thread to find them, if it still exists.

OP hasn't been back since he just posted a link and nothing of his own opinion

Troll thread to watch the forum argue?
I'm busy at work mate which is why I haven't seen able to add anything to do this thread but if the admins think it's causing a divide within the forum feel free to lock the post and also my comment about getting kicks from this post was a joke and nothing else.

How many black swimmers have you seen in the olympics?

I can only think of Cullen Jones.

I'm not sure that argument....holds water (fnar)

Up to the mid 90's you might have argued that black people can't play Tennis or Golf, but that's because those sports were very white-centric and not really something that was easy for black people to get in to

Then the Williams sisters and Tiger Woods came along and pretty much owned the sport.

Those two sports still are very white-centric really. I imagine swimming clubs are very similar.

I don't think, in my honest opinion, the two phrases are the same.

I disagree with the blame by implication of the silence thing, it's hyperbolic and emotive.

But, how do we describe the phenomenon that white people on average do better than non whites?

It's a simple description of something that exists, not a call to arms or political slogan.

Yeah we are terrible in water. Something to do with bone density or something but I for the life of me can't float! My friends didn't believe me and when we were on holiday they tried to make myself and two others float. We all sank like rocks :D

I can swim though, got my Frosties badges and everything for proof. I just can't lie back and float. Though i gave up trying to become a decent swimmer when I went to the pool once and was really giving it my all and an old lady in her 70s came by me like a literal fish barely breaking the water. Got to the end of the pool and got out immediately. Never returned :p

We had a proper pool in the ground at my grandmothers home so it was never down to a lack of opportunity. I just don't think the sea is a strong point of 'ours'.

I still LOL at the scene in Gone in 60 Seconds where they go and pick the big, black dude up from the driving centre. :D

Just take solace in the knowledge that when the zombie apocalypse lands, you’ll be able to run away faster.

You can do that, but thankfully most people are aware of the difficulties people with disabilities face.

Simply not the case.

Most people are not aware of what difficulties people with disabilities face, even if that disability is a wheel chair for example.

There are lots of disabilities were it's not obvious.

A lot of that is down to biology. Black people tend to have have heavier bones which isn't good for swimming.

People should only focus on where their physical strengths are and ignore the political crap. Because politics isn't going to win you anything in sports.

A team doesn't care what someone looks like, they just want to win.
