What is your favourite MMO?

Absolutely Dark Age of Camelot. As said previously the PvP in other games hasn't come close. It was New Frontiers that killed it for me rather than ToA though.

Just in case Mythic are reading: Having something that benefits your faction for all players really helps create a community (read relics). It gives you something to fight for whether you be into PvP or PvE. The introduction of a third faction into the mix also creates excitement rather than the generic good v evil mix that is prevalent now.

And if you ever think of making DAoC2, please don't introduce insta-port to the frontiers. Sitting on the pad fostered the community.

SWG from before the CU, the gameplay was great and the skill trees were amazing, the freedom to be what you want and change if you want was brilliant and I've never found myself so immersed in a game since!

Saying that I am enjoying WAR at the moment the RVR is quite refreshing after being a slave to blizzard for what has felt like a lifetime but out of all of the recent mmo's I've tried since SWG I haven't felt myself gripped quite so hard..

I'll be watching out for future games cropping up on the horizon and who knows ; )

Lineage 2, but i've been playing playing on private servers ever since i got broadband internet.

Love the open pvp

Personaly i think SWG had the most potential, and the best crafting system I've ever used, but it was just let down by the devs.

DAoC was my first MMO, and it was a great game, i just wish i played on US servers from the start instead of having to deal with GOA on the EU servers.

Personaly i hope someone comes up with a new MMO thats based on warhammer 40k, is an FPS game like planetside (but even bigger, much more wide scale battles and battles that have a real impact on the game world like eve), with the crafting system of SWG.

Doubt they'll have the balls to make it anything like Planetside, but still :)

I use to play Matrix Online for like 2yrs straight...and loved it...but left it cos the stories got boring and I couldnt be bothered anymore.

I tried COH for a while but didnt get into it. Then I heard the news that DC Universe Online was coming out later this year and then I got very excited. having looked at the screenshots and the videos, I can safely say this is one MMO I will definitely be playing for a long time to come when its released.

Then there was news that Need For Speed Online is being released later this year. Now that would be interesting to see. How are you going to be able to play an MMO based on cars? We will see how that fairs.

I've played most of the big mmo's and even worked in CS on one but I'd have to say UO, DAOC and Planetside are the ones I enjoyed the most.

UO: Played on Europa and it was my first mmo, great feeling of a big dangerous world and so many things you could do, loved it.

DAOC: Probably the best PVP I've experienced in a game, I'm currently back on the 14 day trial on the US classic servers (no TOA) and having fun.
Played on both the US and Euro servers back in the day on each side, mostly Hibb and Mid though.

Planetside: Great game in it's hayday, played on Warner in the Formido outfit with Mrbrett and co if anyone from there remembers, also the odd spot of Halibut action, a bit of time on the TR side too.

Wow was good but eats up your life if you're not careful, SWG, AOC, Tabula Rasa and Warhammer all had their good points but never grabbed me like the others.

I think I might be getting too old for all this mmo business, jobs, gf and rl really do not mix well with mmo's. :)

Dungeons N Dragons online, the only MMo ive liked, been playing on/off since beta which was just over 3 years ago.

Have tried trials and betas of other games but none really grab me like DDO did, its not everyones cup of tea as pvp is limited ( which i think is good) the quests are all instanced, so no one outside your party can enter ( another good point imo), xp is based on quest completion and any optionals, not per kill as in most mmos, mods are currenlty free, should be getting mod 9 in the next month or so, which will raise the lvl cap to 20.
Downside is there is some grinding involved due the crafting that was introduced, but then you dont need to grind if you dont really care about the uber items, like myself.

I've been playing this again for the return for free week, I really like the new intro areas. I always got frustrated with it because I'd try to solo everything, but I think I might stick with it this time if there are people to group with around. Looks really well with the DX10 shinies now too.

You got any screenies of this? Never even heard about it until mentioned on here.

I'll take a few tonight. It's using an older version of the lotro engine and it is getting on a bit now, but it doesn't look half bad. It's very different from most mmo's, and very punishing if you don't group up.

Much more like a traditional D&D pen and paper session - almost all instanced - you really need rogues to find traps and secret passages, you have to be very tactical as they don't regenerate mana or health, only shrines or potions will do this during an adventure, you find yourself thinking carefully about every heal you cast.

Definitely not for everyone, but well worth a look.

Played a fair few over the years but only the following 5 properly.

EQ1
My first ever MMO and as such holds good memories for me. Running round Butcherblock as a dwarf pally with no idea what i was doing. The game was hard and unforgiving and thats what i miss most in all the newer MMO's. You die you lose xp, you run back naked to get your corpse which could be miles away depending on if you could get a nice person to bind you or not. To travel you either wait for a boat or pay someone to port you, waiting for a boat seems boring but have had some right laughs hanging around with 10 - 15 other people. Mobs didnt stop chasing you and the only way to escape was run to some guards if there are any or zone. Nothing like training 30 mobs to zone and seeing everyone scatter! Also i like the itemisation and the way you had to camp for hours to get the good drops, again it sounds boring but really made it seem like you achieved something when you got it.

I tried playing this again recently and it has changed a lot and there is pretty much zero groups at low level (i got to mid 30's and only grouped with 1 person once). Can't wait for the progression server to start though.

DAoC
My favourite ever!!!! I loved the PvE and it was the game that first introduced me to PvP. Again, the game was hard, levelling took ages and if you died you lost a chunk of XP. On a bad night you could end up with less than what you started with. Groups were pretty much required to level. When i hit level 50 it felt like such an acheivement, farming the hib shredders in DF. Think the day i dinged i'd been at the same spot from around 8 in the evening till 5 in the morning. No other game has made me do such long sessions.

When you hit 50 the game becomes something else though, it's all about the RvR. I loved all of it as my Friar, either soloing or grouping, if solo i used to head out into Albions zones to see if i could pick a fight or would group up and hit the hib zones, rarely went to Mid for some reason. DF is the best dungeon ever and have had some great PvP moments in there too. Think it frst went downhill a little bit with SI and then more with ToA, gave up before NF.

Planetside
Loved this game when it first came out, played it with quite a few OcUK members (i was Gooner in game). Massive FPS battles with tanks and planes. Is was pretty simple but worked very well, they made some major changes though and it just isnt anywhere near as good as it used to be.

WoW
Played since release and loved it. Although it was pretty easy and you didnt need to group i still found levelling enjoyable and loved 40 man raids in MC etc. It is a very polished game and easy to get into for new players. It has gone downhill rapidly recently though, its like they make it easier with every patch. TBC i thought was a good expansion, i liked the zones and the raid encounters but just as i stopped playing they were already making them easier and more attainable for everyone. I don't think i could ever go back as it just isnt the same game anymore.

WAR
Overall this was pretty disappointing, everyone was hoping for DAoC2 but it's nothing like it. I liked the way you could level through PvP or PvE though. PvE was just like a single player RPG, no one talked or grouped when levelling as it was easier and quicker to solo, there was virtually no chat on any of the zone channels. Scenarios are very enjoyable but playing them constantly makes the rest of the game seem like an elaborate lobby. PvP was ok while levelling but when you got to tier 4 stuff it was just a complete zerg fest. I don't think i saw 1 even fight. It was easier gaining RR avoiding the big battles and taking undefended keeps which damn boring after a couple. One thing it does have in its favour is that is very easy to log on for even as little as 30 mins and actually acheive something so will appeal to people who cant put as much time in.

Darkness Falls was an amazing dungeon. Very minimalist, but yet it seemed to have loads of atmosphere and you always felt very nervous in there. Good use of sound to achieve that iirc.

I found that in WAR too. A saw a few people but not many wanted to chat or team up.

LOTRO

Still playing the trials on this and ive just reached level 7. But again not much interaction with other people. Isnt this the point of MMO's?

Seems more like a single player game at the moment.

Anyone know how high you can get with the trial? Is it level 10, or unlimited?

Hopefully I get the chance to explore some more before my trial ends.

Very true, you knew the stuff was going to hit the fan soon when tha access to the place changed to another side, suddenly start seeing kill spam and then a mob of enemy running towards you. :)

SWG, Pre-CU. Obviously.

Trying the "new" SWG atm, so many features gone, but to be honest I just wanted to look around the planets again :p Miss my old characters :(

It depends what you want.

WoW is great in some ways. You can level up solo or in a group. once you get to 80 you can either raid or pvp. The pvp is fast, fairly balanced and most classes can kill others or stand a chance, the classes are not overly strict like traditinal MMOs which makes it fun but it really isn't very in depth or tactical.

Eve doesn't have the same instant fun factor but is overall better I think. If you die you lose hours worth of money so the game is much more realistic and hardcore. It is more like fighting a war in real life would be so it has more tactics, polotics and general depth if you get into the 0.0 stuff.

but it takes over your life, gets you angry (you have to get involved with a big corp and potentially annoying people if you want to stand a chance.) but is also much more rewarding if you succeed.

I loved Planetside also and Lineage2 but I suspect I would find them a bit poor these days however I am eagerly awaiting another MMOFPS and even Aion for the sexy Korean graphics,
