Amongst my social circle I don't know anyone who earns less than £50k. By the way isn't psychology a pseudoscience, my father in law seems to think so and he is a psychiatrist.

With History being a hugely academic and worthwhile subject? Come on, don't play these silly games and bring the debate into tit-for-tat. Behave yourself.

I'm happy for you and your friends.

Well yeah, it'd be wrong to group it with true sciences, but that doesn't mean it's pointless, obviously.

Definition of a true science, please. (Sorry, I'm not digging at you, just saying if it's not a true science, then it's a pseudo science. Of which it clearly isn't). How have I got dragged into this? :p

Sorry, my typo, but the point still stands. Actually, it's not quite right because those that can avoid it don't pay 50% tax.

It's still at £150k whether you end up paying it or not.

Salary: I'd hit the new 50% tax bracket if it wasn't for my accountant

:)

FFFUUUUUU. I meant to say traditional sciences ;).

How can it be viewed in the same way as physics, chemistry and biology when the psychodynamic approach is wrapped up in it... then with the experiments, you either have to just observe real life (which means there are untold variables you can't control), but if you put people in a lab then it's not reflecting reality, is it? Merrr.

God damn Freud. :p Let's just say that it occupies the grey area between and leave it there :D

There are plenty of electronics and computers in cars nowadays. Do a decent uni course on embedded computing/electrical engineering/real time computing and get looking.

I've met people who work on the ECU systems for rally cars, travel the world with the WRC team (maybe not anymore the WRC basically doesnt exist!) but it sounded great. Its something I'm certainly considering getting into after uni, along with the usual financial/military sector type stuff.

A good degree in CompSci or even better various Engineering (MechEng/ElecEng/CompEng whatever) can get you anywhere.

That's the sort of thing I would like to be doing but unfortunately I am no braniac with maths (don't get me wrong, I am certainly not bad at it) and as a result I did not take Mathematics or a Science at A level and this is a must for most degrees of this kind :(

Perhaps I went to the wrong type of university but a lecturer is a Doctor and one or two people that run the school/faculty are professors, then it goes vice chancellor? That sounds like an American scheme?

eg. 90% of the lecturers are not professors and you need to be very good and get to the top/managerial side to become a professor (at least in the UK as I think lecturers in the US are called professors?).

Who/where abouts do you work? I'm trying to get into the oil industry (geoscience) at the moment so am always interested in experience/feelings about the industry and lifestyle. (i'm guessing middle east and ex pat as opposed to rotation?)

Myself...

Current Job - Unemployed bum
Salary - whatever I find on the floor (guess I really should be getting in to JSA...)
Working towards - A job in the oil/mining industry where a relevent degree is essential and a masters/Phd can help which is why i'm trying to see if I can get onto a masters course for next academic year.

I work for an oil, gas, petrochem and pharma engineering company. Im not sure how much geoscience they cover, not much Id imagine, those sorts of services are mainly covered by the main clients/stakeholders of a O&G project (Shell, Exxon, etc), or they would contract it out to a smaller specialised company. The company I work for engineer, procure, construct turnkey plants, stations, etc.
I worked in the office for 3.5 years to build up my knowledge before moving onto site based work. Im in Thailand as an expat; we do have a lot of middle eastern jobs too.
The industry isnt good at the moment, some companies are winning a lot of work, others arent. Its really hit and miss. Im enjoying it though, hard work but youre paid accordingly. Beats office work any day of the week.

Sounds about right - EDIT - if youre an electrical designer, why are you a tech clerk? Did you try and apply internally for any electrical designer jobs, or speak to the other designers in the office (staff and contract)? Im sure they would put you in touch with their agencies? I know many of them dont have degrees.

I actually have a Mphys. I suppose that isn't hugely academic either....

But youre right, I'll behave myself.
