What is your view on Dx10?

Got Vista / XP dual boot here and rarely find myself in Vista because XP still does a better job with gaming and that's all I use my desktop PC for (have a laptop for web/apps/coding).

Certainly DX10 is not enough to change anyones mind about selling their PC. The visual differences are pretty minor.

as for dx10...what does that even do other than cripple performance even further ?

this is something I also wonder. I found similar results to you when I used Vista, and it totally put me off. Ive not tried it with the service pack yet, but from what you said, I dont think ill waste my time.

Vista has been universally welcomed, and far more popular at release than 98 or XP ever was. Vista makes XP look like Windows ME.
lol I almost spat my drink out. You have got to be kidding right? MS have practically shoved Vista down our throats from day 1. We had no choice but to accept it.
Your comment about Vista making XP look like ME, is completely bogus.

When I last tried Crysis benchmark in DX10 it was only a few fps slower than DX9, and it Vista seems on par with XP here now.

Why would you be bothered about 185fps in Vista compared to 330 in XP? 185fps is perfectly playable.

no offence to you but crysis benchmark means crap all to me.....it almost seems as if more ppl use that game to benchmark rather than play...its like 3dmark but slower.

yeah 185 fps is perfectly playable but im talking first person shooters online and every frame per second counts......185 being the average and my fps cap being set at 125fps so there are plenty of times it would be dropping below 125.

saying that 185fps is perfectly playable is besides the point. The point is, its a hell of a lot slower than XP. What if that 330fps in XP was something lower, like 75? what would that be in Vista? 35? 40fps? I think the point is XP performs better than Vista in games. And whats the reason for it? DX10? If so, then I dont want DX10 on my machine.

Crysis is faster than 3DMark here and besides Crysis deserves the nickname Crymark07.

ive installed vista a number of times just hoping it would be close to xp in performance but it isnt....just 2 days ago was the last time as there was lots of hype about service pack 1 bringing a massive performance boost.
well i installed vista and ran a timedemo of an online game where there were lots of players running/shooting...a nice good test for the cpu.

xp 330-360fps depending on drivers
vista 185 using latest drivers

it wasnt even close.......maybe vista fairs better in sp games where cpu power isnt needed as much and its more about gpu power.

I've been reading some of your posts in the Windows forum, all you seem to do is moan about Vista and about how it seems to run slower on your pc, fine don't use it then.

I for one really like Vista and fine it a great improvement over XP, and I'm sure that my pc runs better with Vista than it ever did with XP. I don't want to go back to XP.

Many benchmarks articles have seen only a marginal difference between the two OpSystems especially since SP1.

Im sure, given the same time period as XP, Vista will be a vastly superior Operating system in all aspects.

I wouldn't bank on it :) not if its successor is due out next year.

It's not due out next year. 2010 is a tentative date and even then it could easily slip.

I'm sure Vista will be on par to XP at some point. It's not *that* far from that now. It's not like XP isn't annoying/chuggy if you don't rip out the rubbish and/or tweak it.

This is true. I've spent ages developing a custom build of XP, stripping out most of the original product and streamlining an unattended build of it.

Still, at least it's doable :).

Support will not instantly end for Vista you know, XP's first.

actually I dont know about that. Im wondering why the next Windows is due out so soon after Vista. Maybe MS is planning to "replace" (for the lack of a better word) Vista with this new OS. Thats my opinion anyway.

True enough :)

Pretty much the same here to be honest. Whenever I have the misfortune of using a "vanilla" Windows XP install, Vista doesn't actually look so bad.

Since XP support seems to be going on untill 2010 Vista support will in no way stop before XP and that is a fact, if that happens there will be hell on.

ive mentioned in my posts that it looks great and i love the game mahjong titans it comes with:p

so i dont just moan about vista.

ive pointed out in my posts that ive installed vista a few times...once when i first got it...next when drivers were meant to be much improved and now when service pack 1 has been released....every time its been disappointing.

i dont see where the problem is....or dont you just like me sharing my experience as its different to yours

New Windows releases were always around 2 to 3 years after the previous release, excluding XP to Vista. So no, their not rushing out a new OS to replace Vista, their just going back to their more traditional development cycles. ;)

Vista will be supported the same as any other Microsoft OS (ie for a long time), and should Dx11 show up you can be pretty certain it will be supported accross both Vista and 7.

vista reminds me a bit of windows me....its not as bad but its no xp either.

*EDIT* i would be surprised if its support continued the way xp's has

What game is this in? If you're using the latest drivers for Vista, I call BS. Did you test the timedemo in Vista using virtualPC under XP or something?
