What IT Certificates do you have?

You listed a "gee, not very qualified" above a master's degree? lol.

Yes, I think this guys post answers why a genuine enjoyment and 'innate' ability + years of experience is better than a masters:

I'm the proud holder of a Comptia A+ which I got when I was 15. I think 8 years on it's probably lapsed ;).

I'm now a director and, dealing with people who have these certifications (MCSE/A, CCNA, CCNP, etc) on a daily basis, I can assure you they count for very little. Some of the questions we've been asked by so-called 'professionals' would have you all in fits of laughter!

When I'm hiring I look for (in this order)

- Experience
- Intelligence
- Genuine passion for IT
- Personal skills + ability to work in a team
- Qualifications (although a good degree helps prove point #2)

Obviously larger companies may take a different view but I thought it was worthwhile to offer you mine.

I was referring to putting a gnvq above a masters, not the experience that you mentioned... That went straight over your head, didn't it? :p

SCO Xenix Certified Engineer (1989)

That's it in 25 years of IT, the only certificate I've ever got and I got that in one morning at SCO. I was supposed to spend the afternoon fixing a system they'd broken at lunchtime but I fixed it in five minutes before I realised it was part of the test.

I completely agree with others here; when I'm hiring I want experience and attitude before largely meaningless exams (and I include Computing degrees in that).

GNVQ Advanced IT
HNC Advanced IT
ITIL Practitioner
MCSE Messaging 2003
Few other SQL MCP's
MCITP 2008

But it's the experience that is more important imo! ;)

Bar my degree I only have an ISEB foundation certificate in software testing, still I do well. In the 4 years since leaving uni I have more than doubled my salary and never not been successful in an interview.

The key to IT is not how many certificates you have it is to specialise and specialise some more! I specialise in a number of open source web automation tools, and when I go for interviews I'm usually up against 1 other person if any, and they can't really afford not to take me on irrespective of experience (or negotiate on salary demands for that matter). Also makes you damn difficult to replace.

good post.

I do not have a degree, but i think a degree in IT shows a lot more than the subject itself, willing to learn, discipline and self dependence. Not worth all of the debt that people get in tho :p

To answer the ops aquestion, I only have one Windows 2000 Pro MCP with about 8 years of experience.
