What kind and size of saw do I need?

If the access is good and you're confident of operating it then a chainsaw would be ok to hire for the period - I'm assuming you're not thinking about buying one just for this?

If the access is more restricted then a bow saw is probably the better option plus since you'd need to buy it the saw would be available for future jobs like this. It's obviously not quite as quick but as Stan says it still shouldn't take long at all and it would be that bit safer for a novice operator.

We have many other trees but none which need immediate attention. This is to get the 14 foot trampoline in and one of the trees' upward branches is causing an issue with the safety net. So yes, this could be a $40 half day hire of a chainsaw. I probably should buy one at some stage though.

Thanks chaps.

Stanley knife. Think of it as penance.

Shoosh, now. There there. Daddy's here.

Chainsaws are potentially very dangerous, if you don't know anyone who can get you going with some hands on training/tips I'd put my manhood to one side and give it a miss, it won't take more than a handful of minutes to do it by hand

Ok, I'm in two minds. I've used chainsaws before but that was maybe 10 or 15 years ago and I don't own now. Any chainsaw activity would have to be done by me or I'd get a guy in (I'm kind of favouring this as the topic goes on, he could do other stuff too). This sounds good.

The other option is manual saw and I'm sure I'd cut my leg or arm or head off so no.

The thought has crossed my mind, will you even be able to hire a chainsaw without showing your class one chainsaw license (or whatever the kiwi equivilent is) ?

Accept no substitutes!

^ what's a chipper got to do with it? :p

I'm not sure there is a chainsaw licence in NZ

There must be an equivilent? Can't see insurance companies wanting to insure the relevent job sectors without one.

Apparently* if you repeatedly punch the tree for a few seconds then you can lop off cubes of wood. That allows you to craft a wooden axe which makes the whole thing a lot easier.
