What makes a great game

I have been in the PC industry since 1986 and I have seen many many games. I can't say that graphics matter when it comes to a good game as much as the gameplay and a good plaot line.

Half Life had a teriffic plot line and Deux Ex was good to there. Battlefield 2 has the online fps gameplay (urban maps) sorted from my point of view and some racing games have been good to incuding Colin Mcrae and GRID of late. So for me its game play and not repetitive boring opponents of which ID software can be culpable of recently.

Anyone else got a shout for what makes an awesome game ?

i think it's a combo of having an enthralling storyline, decent graphics to give you the 'wow' factor and generally having a lot of things to do, to make it last as long as possible. saying that tho, it has a lot to do with who is playing it, and what their tastes are. for me, crysis was great fun (up until the aliens appear), but for a lot of people it was a boring tech demo

I find online play enjoyable, but single player NEEDS great visuals and more importantly, a great story.

A challenge will keep me glued to a game, more so if it's with other people. No much bothered about online play with a story. That's hardly anything interesting.

Graphics are cool and shiny, but I have just as much fun playing Deus Ex now as I did when it came out - 11 years ago! (God that makes me feel old...)

Gameplay is by far the most important aspect of any game. If the gameplay is boring, or confusing, overly repetitive, too easy, too hard... any of those faults can easily break a game. If a game can hold your attention and inspire you - in whatever way - to play on, whether it's to get past a difficult puzzle, kill a hard enemy, or just get a higher score, that's a good game.

Story is important, but only for plot-based games. Peggle is still one of the best games I've played recently - no story at all!

I really like Assassin's Creed, it has one hook of a story, but a lotof people say its repetitive. I say its within limits (because you can play it how you like).

But this makes me think. Them mad old PSone Harry Potter games were all like.... mixing up the gameplay and things... And I used to like them.

Does that make them some of the best games ever?

Story is(was) great but not in a game. :P

Has to have a combination with some of the following for me to enjoy it:

Gameplay & Story. Every game is repetitive so I just accept this now as decent variety gameplay designs went with the 8bit programmer in their own home era

Graphics. Its 2009 so they need to be good as no shortage of decent PC middleware. Very poor gfx are not acceptable for full price games nowadays (Section8 I'm looking at you )

Sound. Music needs to suit the visuals & SFX need to be strong. No excuses as there are plenty of decent tools around for this media.

Smooth FPS and minimal technical issues.

Easy to pick up & play controls.

No tedious pregame tutorials with overly complex controls.

Undemanding game design (no silly extreme hard moments as thats just a poor excuse for lack of gameplay content IMO).

I just want games which are a pleasant overall experience to spend some of my leisure time.

Getting the magic mix of these features right is very hard to do and few games manage this. The ones that do end up being the GOTY or top 10 for the year contenders.

In the past 2 years IMO the following all qualify on PC for me anyway as being enjoyable and money well spent:

Fallout3 + all DLC
Assassins Creed
Bioshock
Lost Planet Extreme Colonies Edition
Devil May Cry4
Gears Of War
LEGO Batman
LEGO Indiana Jones
Battlestations Pacific
Fuel
Street Fighter4
GTA4
Dead Space
Prince Of Persia (2008)

Assassins creed was ok but I never completed it due to its repetitive nature and long missions. Graphics and movements good but AI not good enough. As a plot line it was weak.

Deux Ex 11 years ago (weep) and half life must be 14-15 years ago. Blub

for single player games: a great storyline and great gameplay (graphics are also important in this day-and-age, but way WAY less important than gameplay/storyline)
for multiplayer games: great gameplay.

grindtastic games like WOW etc are OK, if you like that kind of gameplay style. infact, as far as MMORPGs go, WOW is fairly up there in terms of controls etc.

Characters that develop and that you can develop your own way, hence why I love MMO's. You don't suddenly finish the game and your character is gone, your character develops, gains its own "personality" for want of a better term and even if you get sick of the game you still have something to show for after a lot of game time rather than a 30second cut scene
