What makes you proud to be English?

They contributed to you though. Its part of who you are...
True, but I still don't see anything to be proud of. I can be grateful for them passing me good genes (as well as resentful of the crappy ones ;)) but I still can't take pride in something that is their achievement - if you'll permit me to speak of myself as an achievement!

Tbh Britton isnt a proud nation like they once were.

Back in WW2 you would probably not here any of this type of disrespect for it.
And before that they were even more prouder.
It was once a proud nation that stopped doing as many things to make them self proud. All the car componys have been sold to overseas componys along with other major componys that influenced the world so much.

These days it seems that Brittions national pride has just run out, There will be a few but nothing like it used to be.
I cant explain why its like this these days and i bet most of you cant either.

Many countrys gane and lose pride all the time and it looks like brittons pride is on its way down.
Thats why history is important. It shows off all the special things people and your country acheived and makes you feel all warm inside :)

For me, it is the spirit of the rights of Englishmen and the Industrial revolution, where we are individuals and proud of it, and where mountains, no matter how tall, do not stand in our way, where pioneers push the boundaries and dare to go, and dare to do, things that have never been done before.

Boldly going where no man has gone before...

I didn't realise quite how proud I was to be Welsh until I moved to England :p

This is my point, people are proud of their home. They more often than not won't know it until they move away. I think it might be something to do with sense of place.

Your home is your environment, it is what shapes your very character and to say you're not proud of that is an open statement that you dislike yourself.

On a national level, I'm from Essex. I know it's not the most brilliant place on the planet, but it's where my family and friends are and I will not put up with anyone bad mouthing it. Loving your home, your friends and family is not a bad thing.

Patriotism is only bad when we have the over zealous people using it as an excuse to elevate themselves.

My Welsh friend is very vocal about the fact he's Welsh. He asked me why I wasn't patriotic, to which I explained to him I am, I just don't go shouting it about.

Theres a fine line between between proud of where you are from (like the Welsh tend to be) and actively discriminating.

When I was at university in Aberystwyth I never had any trouble in three years personally until my last night in the town. I distinctly remember hearing the words "come on then you English ********" when they had pushed my dad over. 8 vs 4, real tough guys  I have a picture of my face the next day...not pretty.

People would do well to remember that we are all different but all pretty similar and there is really no need to keep using nationality to label somebody or a group of people. Live and let live.
