What "man jobs" have you done today?

It’s stuff like this that makes you appreciate dot and dab plasterboard more.
Was just thinking how they'd managed that, then realised not also houses have plasterboard :p . Be tempted to go do the lottery now:cry:. My man jobs involve trying and failing to fix an error message in the car, redoing some laminate, making a dozen balloon animals for the kids (can only do oddly shaped dogs or swords, although can do a worm pretty well:D, and taking the kids to a picnic this afternoon.

It is one of three discoveries:

I yolo'ed this one^. Dead.

This one is taped and clipped so I haven't had the courage to lick it yet :o :p :D

I guess some wall lights were retrofitted once upon a time!
Get a volt stick, soon see if there's any power.

Had the laser level out (honest it's an amazing tool. Use it all the time, every time I out a picture, shelf etc up) and out up batwing finally. Plan to led illuminate behind it too.

Also put up pics for the gf in her study.

The laser level obviously didn't help you get the camera straight :D.

I'm pulling your leg of course, it's a tool I really need but can't decide on which model to get, what features I need or how much to spend.

Nice room BTW.

I was running Cat6 and cable for all rooms TV and customer was filling a hole in the living room that was an old wall light and capped off with a cable block, by using very wet filler

He killed all power when I was in the loft :(

Ripped out the pond corner beading which we didn't think at the time but rusted, the rusting stain on the white pond and it also blow out the plaster and the exterior paint on top.

So now that's ripped out, it's been replastered but thankfully it doesn't have to be perfect. Once that's dry it will have outdoor tiling on it :D and not have rust stains :( I have two more corners to go but that will do for this afternoon.

I dont how you have fixed the base rail/spindles and it could be a pain but for the longevity of your deck I would raise the base rail off the deck. Over time any small gap will get clogged up and water will pool. If you raise it 80-100mm sweeping the deck will be easier. As you have done oil is the best way to go. Be gentle with pressure washers if you cant regulate it pressure. Even the cheap washers have too much pressure for softwood decking. I find once slabs start to get the black lichen your on a losing wicket. It can be improved with chemicals and a pressure washer but it seems to come back quicker after each treatment.
Yeah you're right about the gap, I wanted a small gap for looks, but didn't account for how many leaves would end up on it. It will be easy enough to lift it as the rails are held on with brackets and the spindles are not nailed in place. Quite enjoying sweeping it, its kinda therapeutic. Pressure washer won't be going anywhere near the decking, I have good water pressure and a normal hose does a decent job of blasting the dirt off it.

Job for today was replacing some plastic gutter joins that were leaking. I used to fly up and down ladders all day in my job, but after not being up one for a few years I'm now terrified of heights it seems.. Didn't help that the 25+ year old plastic brackets were hard and brittle and wouldn't unclip, so i had to break the clips off.

@Lean is right, the previous owners of our house (or their contractors) didn't leave a gap at all on the decking for the balcony. It captures all sorts of debris which in turn holds moisture and causes issues down the line. Had their been a gap it would have been a lot easier to sweep clean and the water would drain better.

Another job on the list of the house of bodge, think this is job no.654.

Riddle me this. Looking at swapping all sockets in the bedrooms now before the decorators come in. They’ve got nice new brown (x2), blue (x2), green/yellow (x1) wires. Much neater than downstairs.

But our new faceplates have two holes for earth and we’ve only got one cable. In the instructions one is labelled “functional earth” and the other “to mounting box earth terminal”.

Which do we use? Or should we have two earth cables? They are double sockets.

The two earth terminals on the new sockets will be commoned, so they're connected directly together. Connect the earth you already have to the 'functional earth' terminal. You'll need a short fly lead, basically a short length of cable the same cross sectional area as the functional earth to connect between the other earth terminal and the lug on the back box.

to connect between the other earth terminal and the lug on the back box.
I was going to say this, but our back boxes don’t appear to have a lug for connecting a fly lead. Would an electrician fit a new back box if he were replacing the faceplates for us?

Electricians will avoid fitting new backboxes because it will damage the plaster and surrounding area removing them.

Just don't worry. As long as the socket is earthed you're now well into nice to have requirements.

They would if you specifically asked and paid for it but I expect they'd rely on the back box being earthed via the metal screws that secure the sockets into the back box.

All the faceplates I've used recently had the earth connected to the screw holes. Only time I've connected to the back box first is where I've got multiple earths combining - saves trying to wedge them all into the faceplate.

Today I murdered a mouse
It came to close to the house
For the want of a cat
I gave it a bat
With a bolster and now its no more.
