My 3 cheap MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition card have Hynix.

The 4x290X 8GB reference cooled Sapphire cards i acquired have Elpida.

You guys know that GPU-Z tells you what memory you have?

Yes but not sure if it had mem ID support for the 290 back then.

The second i got those bad boys in my rig gpu-z was my first port of call.

Nice. I've owned a ton of Hawaii cards and the highest Asic I've seen is 77% of about 15 cards.

I have a Powercolor R9 290 and a VTX3D R9 290, reference cards.
Both flashed to 290X and both have Elpida memory. The Powercolor had black screen issues initially but sorted after some tweaking. Had no black screen issues since I've been running the two in crossfire.

Hmm what bios did you use to flash them with?
I too have a Powercolor and it just bricked when I flashed on a 290x bios. I did the tests though and my card should have flashed OK.

Could have been an incompatible bios, have you tried the Sapphire bios?
They should work if it's unlocked since Sapphire is the OEM for AMD anyway.
Use the Hawaii info tool to see if your card can be flashed.
The reading has to be something like this:
RA1: F8000005 RA2: F8010000
RB1: F8000005 RB2: F8010000
RC1: F8000005 RC2: F8010000
RD1: F8000005 RD2: F8010000
Or this:
RA1: F8000005 RA2: 00000000
RB1: F8000005 RB2: 00000000
RC1: F8000005 RC2: 00000000
RD1: F8000005 RD2: 00000000
For your card to be unlockable.

The Asus PT1 bios seems to be one to go for, since voltage is unlocked to like 2v or something stupid, not that I would EVER recommend putting that into a card
