Hi

Currently looking at setting up a NAS to serve 4 windows pcs, xbox 360, PS4 and android tablets, but not sure what route to go down.
At the moment i have a windows share folder on 1 pc but after a hdd failure i had to re rip cds, so thinking of a mirror raid for pics and music with additional dumping ground for less important stuff, i've had a little play with freeNAS and got a CIFS share working okay but i'm very noobie to it and don't have a huge amount of time for learning curve.

What would you folks recommend

They are nice boxes but I find them to be over priced.

Compared to what? They are going to be expensive compared to a Microserver on a cash back deal that doesn't really exist any more and time poured into them by someone who knows what they are doing, but the performance you get out of them and the excellent support is worth every penny if you want something to work out of the box.

been looking at the synology, shame that HP cashbacks expired, but i also came across a d-link dns320 which has a good price point (read cheap ;) )but doesn't offer all the functions of synology. question is if i got the synology and 1 3tb hdd could i add a 2nd 3tb hdd later for a mirrored raid or does it need to be set up in one go.

I've had loads of QNAPS but my recent purchase from the MM here (A Synology DS-712+) tops them all :)

Great little boxes that are designed for a purpose - low wattage, low noise - just stays on all the time.

If al your doing is sharing and / or downloading - I'd highly recommend a qnap or synology.

Yes you can whack in 1 HDD (thats the way mine is at moment) then extend it out to a mirrored RAID setup afterwards when you add an additional HDD. - I'd recommend the WD RED Hard drives too btw.

Whilst the HP microservers are pretty kool for the price I don't like the size, power useage and find them to be overkill for my NAS purposes.

If you want to do it yourself i would say the HP Micro servers are the way to go when they are cheap as chips and have the cash back deals.

I have always had a Drobo though, i wanted the easy painless way out, something i could power on, insert the drives create a quick volume and start dumping data on. It just ticks away, protects my data and lets me know any problems and i have no problems with them. I suffered 1 drive failure and quickly replaced that, no performance loss during it.

Proper NAS system like the synology, its currently serving my Vmware cluster via Iscsi, my Windows Clients via CIFS, and my Linux clients via NFS & CIFS, plus it a central media store for Plex & all other clients. What more can you ask for.

question regarding the synology, is it possible to run it in a mirror to backup say photos and music then once backed up remove mirrored drive and install another drive non mirrored with movies to share across network then if add to music or pics pop back in mirrored drive and sync, or should i just get the 4 bay one :)

Something from Synology, they are great little boxes.

This a million times, ive got the DS 212j with a couple of 1.5tb drives in a RAID 1 setup, sadly one of the drives has packed up so needs to be replaced. But regardless its an excellent little NAS unit, quiet and pretty fast although i think its been replaced with the DS 213 if im not mistaken.

Pretty easy to set up and get going.

You could just add a usb drive to the synology and back up to that....... unplug and replug as you wish.
