What NVIDIA SLI would you buy?

I have not bought new cards since my 9800 GTX SLI and with fermi being such a hot, power hungry, noisy beast, I'm not sure I want to buy a pair of these.

What are the options as an upgrade to 2x 9800 GTX SLI?

Before you suggest ATI instead, sadly it is not an option. ATI Linux drivers are still beyond terrible and I will be using these cards under Linux.

I use 2 x 260 GTX SLi. I would keep your eyes open for any 200 series deals, any of them would serve you well.

Thanks... 2x 260 looks like a well priced option, what should I look for in these generation of cards, RAM? number of stream processors?

I run 275's in SLI and they are great. I am running just about everything maxed out at 1920x1080 and getting great frame rates.

I did have tri SLI and see no extra benefit hense one of them for sale at the moment on MM.

So I agree with Kharbyne... try and get some well priced 275's

WHY...
I am still on 8800 Ultras, they are not being a problem thus far. I am able to play most games at max settings with no lag.

If you are looking for a gaming setup upgrade i would suggest sticking it out with what you have for a few months and see what happens with the nvidia 485 - 490x2

BUT, if you cant wait and want a change, i would say dont bother with a 260 as they are just the same as the 9800 range, the 275 would be an increase but would the cost to improvment be enough? SO, i would be looking towards the 28x

Just to say it is the GTS 250 that is the same as the 9800GTX+

I don't know if thats the best thing tbh, we already waited for 6 months for Nvidia and that didn't turn out so good. Considering there isn't going to a die shrink for a while, I wouldn't imagine the 485 parts are particularly close. I'm pretty sure 495 (490x2) won't happen any time soon, even a single GPU is too hot and power hungry - putting two on a PCB in their current state may cause auto-ignition.

As for GTX 260 = 9800, this isn't the case. The 9800GTX uses the G92 (g92b for the 9800GTX+)GPU chip. As jrwagh righly says, the G92b (the 55nm die shrink) is also in the GTS250. The GTX 260 however, uses the newer generation GT200 core, which is much faster than G92(b). Therefore, going from 9800GTX SLI to GTX 260 SLI, will be almost identical in performance as going from a 9800GX2 to a GTX 295, ie a big jump.

i got my gtx 260 clocked at:
gpu:685 mhz
shader: 1477
memory:1202 with stock cooling. just a thought if you wanted to ring every frame out of 'em.

Thanks for the info. What are the power requirements on the 260/270's in comparison to the 9800 GTX?

guys... why would you buy a pair of 260s to replace a pair of 9800's. you said it ^ figures will be almost identical to the 9800s. If your going to UPGRADE make it worth doing...
