What retro things have you done today?

It will not be faulty for long once you get your hands on it I am sure :)
Fingers crossed.

Doesn't look too bad to fix, great price!

Again, hopefully, I need to find some coolers for it. I also happen to be the highest bidder on the same seller’s “faulty” AGP Voodoo 5 5500 (the one that works fine in 3dmark, so how faulty can it be?).

Value wise the PCI variant must be more valuable?
They are rarer, but as this hasn’t got the stock coolers I’m not sure (assuming I can get it going) how much that’ll affect value. The annoying thing is whilst looking at cooling options for my Voodoo 3 a few months ago there were some brand new coolers on eBay, now they aren’t anywhere to be seen :(

This weeks pickups arrived:

Any of you more knowledgeable people know if this S3 card is better than S3/Virge DX? I was going to harvest the ram for my DX but this is dated 1997 which is newer than I expected.

From memory the 86C375 is my DX which has a higher core speed, the 325 is slower, memory speed seem the same though between cards, unsure if your card is a DX or not?

The confusion is my chip 100% has DX on it, and i do not recognise your N1 number, i'm sure mine is Q5 something.

my DX is the 86C375. I also have a number 9 reality 332 which is the same 86c325 as this new one but only 2mb and no expansion possible.

If I got those I would keep the TINY one and split the rest and sell the parts. Perhaps there may be a couple of other interesting parts. Most of the XP Viglen ones likely be scrap metal

Anyone have any recommendations for unknown arcade hidden gems i can have a look at?

Some favourites from my youth were:

1942 - Vertical shoot-em-up
Street Smart - Fighting game
and 10 Yard Fight - American football. It's so infuriatingly addictive. The timer speeds up as it runs down. (Why do I play this game!)

Spent 6 hours going through every mame game to put everything i wanted into favourites, got a sore arm now :D

1942 is a really good shout from @!bluetonic! I love that game.

If you like vertical shooters or bullet hell shooters, games from Studios such as Raizing, Cave, etc are good.

Battle Garrega
ESP.Rade
Gunwange
Armed Police Batrider

I'm on about the vast amount of machines you lot are building lol.
Reliving the past mainly, over 2/3rds of my systems are built with components my past machines were made of (or even using some of the original 90s/2000s parts in some cases).

The rest of my systems are playing with stuff I wasn’t in a position to own when they were new (like the dual PIII machines, and my proposed dual Socket 604 Xeon machine... RAMBUS baby!).

It’s a hobby like any other. Some people collect stamps, I collect retro/vintage hardware :p

Some of these systems that you lot are building would have cost thousands of pounds back when they first got released!
That’s kind of the point!

But some of these systems now cost multiple hundreds. You can easily build a modest office PC or light modern gaming PC for the cost of some of these retro machines. It’s not a cheap hobby any more unfortunately, not now the masses have jumped on them.

Several things for me: Building up prior machines and the memories which go with. Going through all the joys / pains of working with old hardware. Being able to replay favorite games on the proper hardware.

The monetary value is somewhat of a moot point, new hardware depreciates, all this retro stuff is appreciating so is either a cost neutral or even a profitable hobby in the long run!!!!

It's a good point, but only if you ever actually shift any of the kit on once it has appreciated in value! So far I've sold nothing in the almost 5 years I've been collecting kit, and the prices paid for stuff has increased almost tenfold!

I'm staring grumpily at my stupid crappy 486 that's refusing to work with any kind of mouse and wondering the same thing!:D

Although I will say I think you lot are a lot worse than me for collecting. I deliberately limit my cases and power supplies so I can only have a couple of active builds at a time :p

Don't know what you mean, I only have 3 ATX cases, 2 AT cases and 2 Shuttles, oh and my Sun Ultra 40 workstation (Let's not mention the G4 Cube, the PowerBook G4, the iMac Blueberry and the Olivetti Pentium 90 Laptop).

Ohhhh.
