What retro things have you done today?

Well I’m the owner of a Geforce 256 DDR. Also means I’m the owner of a PCI ATI Mach64 and some godawful Rage chip card, but I wanted the Geforce!

Scratch one off the “must own” list :)

Geforce 256 is nice. I had a couple in the past but moved them on because they fetch hella money and i didn't really have much use for it.

This did arrive today and i only won it on ebay yersterday. Its a Leadtek A250 Ultra Which is actually a Geforce 4 Ti4600. It was up for £35 and offered £30 which seller accepted. This was the card which had the big cooler on with the 2 fans, but looks to have been replaced with a cooler from i think a Quadro FX card. The Zalman passive cooler arrived today so i may attempt to fit that to it.

I’ve never actually owned an original GeForce 256, so I wanted it to do a few benches with and then decide if I want to keep it or not. As the trio of cards only cost me £60~ and I can sell the Mach64 for at least £15, then this makes for one cheap GeForce 256 (it was poorly advertised, no mention of what card it was).

I do like a good GeForce 4. I’ve got a Ti4200 that needs a RAM replacement, and a Ti4800 that has an aftermarket Zalman cooler on it (not the fanless variety).

If you can get them for the right price (and it seems like you did) its always a safe bet as no doubt you will get you money back, if not more! It would be cool to build a high end machine based on the specific period of hardware.

Late 99 for a Geforce 256 DDR, so that would be a late Katmai or early Coppermine (or early Slot-A athlon). The Coppermine would have the advantage due to integrated full-speed cache I think. Shame this Time computer doesn’t have AGP as essentially it is spot on in terms of era. I guess I could slot it into my P3 850 Slot 1 machine, but the Voodoo IIs would be rendered pointless and the CPU the best part of 12 months too new!

Picked up that laptop today. It has a 486 dx4 75mhz and 8mb of ram. With a 340mb HDD. Was surprised to see windows 95 on it. There is no CDROM so somebody must have sat through the W95 floppy installer!

Absolutely amazing condition for a 26 year old laptop

Finally got round to setting up the SS7 system. Although I am torn what GPU to match with it. For now it has a PCI rage II + DVD 2mb. Not a good match for a k6/2 - 500 but all I had to hand.

What kind of card are you thinking? My K6-3 @ 550MHz I still feel is perfectly matched to the Voodoo 3.

I have a V3 3000 in my K6-III+ Build. Seems like the perfect fit for that type of build, also SS7 can have temperamental AGP which is why lots of people seem to pair V3's with the SS& platform.

Is the dos support good? This will likely be my main dos machine.
New baby due soon so packing away all of my bits except for perhaps 1 project.
I am also really enjoying the soundcard with the OPL4 chip. Nothing like the sounds coming from your wavetable bits but much nicer than the normal FM.
