What retro things have you done today?

that SB16 is fairly big but they get much bigger!

I think that one is a ct3900 awe32.

I know that my awe32 and sw60XG have holes in the far corners so you can fit plastic spacers onto to stop them sagging like modern GPUs do.

Got to love a bit of Ghetto cooling :D

I was doing something similarly dodgy until I decided that making it permanent would make sense, so I knocked this up that I 3D printed.

It simply slides into a Voodoo 3 3000 heatsink, so doesn’t require any additional mounting hardware, even the 60mm fan is push-fit!

to say i am impressed is an understatement!

I really need to get my hand back into 3D modelling and get a printer one of these days. if nothing else to make this kind of thing and a battalion of BattleTech Mechs

That’s awesome! ...how much?

As it was home-designed and home-printed I've not got costs.

If anyone wants one I'll see how much they cost me to produce and put them up on the MM so as to not break any trading rules.

That might get old cos you'll probably be selling them for £0.12 + post. :p

Im still hoping ive got a faulty Memory module, but i have assembled the rest of the PC anyway, Ive left out the CF Reader as im hoping not to need it. put some labels on the front of the case

Its pretty good, theres a mark below the windows 98 logo i cant get off, tried general pc cleaner, and also Isopropyl , bit of hot water and sponge next
Try a magic eraser.

Failing that try a “finishing” car polish, like Sonus SFX-3. With it being a finishing polish it’ll be abrasive enough to remove an ingrained mark, but not aggressive enough to damage the plastic.

set it all up on a little table. Its a little cramp, but its only a hobby thing, so i dont see to much of an issue, bit of old worktop for the monitor and speakers. Keyboard is brand new old stock, as is the mouse and speakers. Monitor is clearly not period but in very good condition for its age... after all this i really hope its just faulty memory module lol :p

Spun up an Intel PGA370 Celeron 600 on an Abit Slotket III PGA370-to-Slot 1 adaptor in an Abit BH-6 mother board driving a Matrox Mystique PCI graphics card. I'm currently still trying to find a working floppy disk / IDE optical drive / IDE hard drive so I can get Win98SE installed and running.

Apprently the OEM win98se doesnt need floppy boots from CD ... but i cant confirm until my memory module arrives

Damn, that's quite a collection.

Do you notice a difference between the CT1740 and CT2230?

The 1740 has the OPL3 YMF262, the 2230 has the OPL3 CT1747 which by all accounts is the YMF262 but integrated in the CT1747 chip.
From Vogons "...SoundBlaster 16 with a YMF262 or CT1747, the latter of which is an ASIC in which a YMF262 is built in"

I've always wondered, what does the rear (near CD interfaces) socket chip do on the 1740 that is missing on the 2230 and so many other boards?

Comparing the CT1740 sound to my CT2230, this track sounds almost identical

SoundBlaster 16 ASP CT1740 playing Doom 2 music (MAP 07 - Dead Simple) (Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 FM)

I haven't given the CT1740 much use if I'm honest, but with that said I plan to test them all out on my 486 DX2 66 at some point so I'll let you know my thoughts.

Cheers. Though a 486 DX2 66 may be slightly underpowered to fully test 16 bit soundcards and could render poor results with stuttering due to CPU speed
