What retro things have you done today?

Are people crazy, possibly £200+ for a card that's probably dead

"Firstly this is sold as is, untested and as it, no returns."
"but I have no way to test it so will sold as see with no guarantees."

I'm presuming people sell high value items like this as "untested" if they are knackered. He/she could quite easily find a machine to test it or even buy a machine for less than £100, test it then sell it for way more as a working item and show it working.
The the IT equipment i've sold I show working with pictures of device manager, benchmarks and a game or two

This whole "sold as seen" "untested" is blatent lies in my opinion. They should be really listed as parts / spares and repairs

Can only assume the fact it has the box and all th associated original paperwork etc. Would be a serious draw for a hardcore collector who might have the card only

I just remembered i had an Asus P5N-E SLI board and a Q6600 in an old case...... damnit I now want to build an age correct sli rig!

I blame you @paradigm :D
I am right now benching q6600 with 3870x2 :P

I like to run as many 3dmark as I can to compare all my systems... Currently seeing nearly 600fps in 3dmark03

Wow an x2! I managed to snag a 3850x2 ages back but stupidly sold it and then when found another it was faulty :(

@Guest2 Here's my OPL3 SB16's along with SB 2.0 and SB Pro 2.0

Damn, that's quite a collection.

Do you notice a difference between the CT1740 and CT2230?

The 1740 has the OPL3 YMF262, the 2230 has the OPL3 CT1747 which by all accounts is the YMF262 but integrated in the CT1747 chip.
From Vogons "...SoundBlaster 16 with a YMF262 or CT1747, the latter of which is an ASIC in which a YMF262 is built in"

I've always wondered, what does the rear (near CD interfaces) socket chip do on the 1740 that is missing on the 2230 and so many other boards?

Comparing the CT1740 sound to my CT2230, this track sounds almost identical

lol nice !

This afternoon's activities have included playing on the Saturn and testing out the Retro-Bit officially licensed clear controller i got last year.

Finally got round to trying the random Japanese only Nissan version of the original need for speed I picked up too :)

Feels weird with different cars but it's really well done still.

Had a blast on Saturn Bomberman and Vampire Saviour at the same time too

After discovering my storage was not as water tight as I had hoped (It already killed a motherboard and psu a few weeks back) I decided to go and rescue my compaqs today.

The smaller P3 unit had some crap on it but nothing too bad and fired right up.. Am going to install windows 2000 on it as getting the 98 drivers working is annoying and it has a 2k sticker and key on it anyway...

The massive P2 unit... Had quite a bit of white covering on the metal a sure sign it had seen damp. Fortunately I used the wall switch because as soon as I flicked it on there was an epic boom followed by a massive spark and magic smoke.. 1 dead PSU which is a non standard unit and potentially more damage inside too..Tripped the entire house! :(

Going to grab the cpu, ram and drives from it and send it to scrap.

Here is a pic from before they went to storage:

I’m mainly in the hobby for the same reason, my collection is pretty large only a handful of built machines at any one time, but enough components to keep building unique machines for a while.

Pretty much all of my builds have something unique or interesting though, like my Socket A build that uses an AGP GeForce 7900GS, or my Slot 1 build with a PowerLeap Tualatin slocket adapter in it, along with SLi Voodoo IIs. My K6-3 build that houses a Voodoo 3, or my Dual Socket 370 build that uses a PCI-X Matrox Parhelia.

Always a twist on the obvious as that’s what keeps it interesting, hence the upcoming dual Socket 604 Xeons!

Still need to get around to doing a Socket 8 and Slot 2 builds.

They all sound great! I am just playing with parts that are either free or incredibly cheap at the moment, I imagine your interesting builds would set me back a fair bit more if I wanted to recreate them. But you should post up some pics! ;)

Absolutely the same boat lol.

The enjoyment of revisiting this old tech is actually the most enjoyable bit and reliving the memories around it all.

I am doing it on a budget around everything else that needs my money, but its still been a good laugh

Much to my wife's delight the house now has a Pentium MMX, Pentium III, Athlon XP, Core2 and most likely soon either a 478, 754 or 486 to join them.

Man, the 7900GS AGP......I was given a 7800GS AGP in a full 939 build which was on a AV8 board too. When I had a blip with jobs a while back had to sell it along with some Retro console stuff I also now regret losing :(

There she is! - NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS video card benchmark result - AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor 4200+,http://www.abit.com.tw/ AV8 (VIA K8T800P-8237) (3dmark.com)

Haha nice! Quite a little collection. I will just have the two P4 rigs, possibly a 370 rig. I also still have my socket 771 Dell, so I'm tempted to put XP or Vista on it and stick an 8800 in it or something... I was originally going to sell it. :p

Friend of mine dug out a 7950GT AGP to give me but he tested it and it was artifacting... Chances of fixing it?

What C3 do you own acme? My main retro PC is built around a Via C3 1200mhz Nehemiah and a Voodoo 3! Its on a Gigabyte Slot1 BX motherboard with a MSI sloket. Its defining feature is it's slowdown capabilities.

Nice! Mine is quite old, it says Cyrix III on it, not CIII. I think it might be 800MHz, but it might be less!

I have been exceptionally lucky and was given my P3 shuttle, the Athlon XP rig was the same in its original form and got my P1 MMX from an old guy on FB Martketplace who was clearing his old office. If i collect it and carry it out myself...it was free :)

On the 7950gt you could have it off him and try re-pasting it?

Could just be old and crusty and forcing it to heat up or not seated correctly.

If its a freebie it has to be worth a stab

So was prattling about this evening on the MMX. I have Radeon 7000 32mb DDR, That should in theory be faster than RIVA 128 right? I am looking that the RIVA on my desk thinking have i gone backwards here.

I really struggled to ever get OpenGL working with the card even with after downloading the complete viper 330 driver pack for it from vogons and installing.

Main reason I bid last minute on the 7000 as thought it was half decent at OpenGL, which it seems to be. Got it for £9 which i thought was a bit of a steal for a PCI version?
