What retro things have you done today?

I think you need to do a build with a sound/midi card in every single slot :p

I tried to do a 6 Sound card build last year but gave up pretty quickly! The resource game gets tiring quickly hahaha! I have two machines with 4 cards currently (AWE32, EWS64XL, Vortex 2 and a Audigy) (Yamaha YMF719, SB16, SW60XG, Maui).

The above setup in the picture is actually really a decent pair and would for fill most needs for games. Both cards are nice and quite, The Awe64 can provide 16bit sound, AWE synth, you can load soundfonts into ram, not as buggy MPU as the other SB cards and the Aztech can do the Genuine OPL FM stuff, SB Pro 2 sound and also has a Bug free MPU for either a wavetable board or external module.

Windows 98SE "OEM" def boots from CD (if thats what your are installing) , as i installed it this way on mine, my floppy drive doesnt work. just get the image from winworld

Thanks for the heads up on the correct media, W98 currently installing. Should be a nice upgrade from the factory 3gb slow HDD. New one is a Seagate Barracuda 7200 / 40gb (limited to 32 or something by BIOS)

Best thing is you can't hear it where the old one sounded like my kids were sifting through a box of Lego lol

Windows 98 now installed again and also remembered about the Gravis Gamepad Pro I picked up fully boxed a year or so ago. All installed and working spot on, well chuffed :)

Machine in general has seen a massive jump in performance with the 7200rpm drive too which is fantastic

Get some pics up dude!

Just dug into my attic to find my old Suzo Arcade and Comp Pro 9pin joysticks to use with my "new" speccy. Mission was unsuccessful, but I did find a crummy Craft joystick which will do until I can do a proper clear out

Looking at ebay I'm astounded at the price of these old 'atari style' joysticks - £40 or more for a microswitched one! I really need to track down those sticks of mine.

But I also came across a very special game: Elite on C64 tape.

Not only is this one special due to it being one of the all-time best games, but this one was a copy I won in a competition from Firebird Software, where they were demoing the game before release at a computer show. You had to get the most number of credits in two dockings, and I came second. I just missed winning a C64 disk drive.
All the contents are there in the box, unused (though the outside of the box is slightly tatty now), including a letter from Firebird congratulating me on winning the prize. A nice piece of personal gaming history there.

Will do when I get a chance, still in bits on the floor atm and I have lost it to the kids playing ultimate race pro and pro pinball - big race USA lol

Picked up this monitor today for free! Had a nice chat with the guy too! Also a retro gamer.

Technically its probably way worse than the HP it replaced but its got that early LCD warmth that really reminds me of my first one!
Goes up to 1280x1024 too which was a surprise but the important part is it does the lower resolutions a lot better than the other screen did.

Yea although they are just about good enough for windows sounds.... Not much else :P

I am trying to find a way to record audio from this PC so I can upload some samples but whenever my main PC is switched on there is so much noise. As soon as I switch it off the output is clean.

Good work, nothing better than free!
What make & model is it? Looks like the earlier Sony Vio screens which also have built in speakers

Its a "mitac-a17e" That photo doesnt do it justice. Pretty sharp at max res too!

Those speakers are honestly a waste of the materials used to make them

Standard in screen speakers right there. Looks a good little panel though :)

I have a 17" or 19" 4:3 dell one in the garage I should dig out so I am not running mine on my work wide-screen.....just looks daft

trying to post images but failing miserably.....I blame tiredness with a sprinkling of stupid

Bottom line, if you can get a Gravis Pro Pad, they are well worth it
