What retro things have you done today?

I have a feeling somehow windows installed it's own driver again instead of the Yamaha installer cd version despite being directed to the latter.

It's showing as WDM driver and I don't have any of the control panel software stuff that it seems comes with the drivers. Might be the issue? Worth a stab reinstalling it anyways

Something is defo a miss as now wolf3d doesn't detect a card at all and doom has lost its SFX.
Yeh, that'll be it. WDM drivers do not support FM, only VXD.
Check by going on dxdiag and going on sound. Under type it should say VXD when the correct drivers are installed

Quite a retro weekend for me today. Mainly installing and testing if old games work on my retro machine
The only thing I cant get working fully is CD audio from Daemon tools with VDX drivers. CD audio works but causes huge lags in games unless analogue audio is disabled on daemon tools. From the CD, its fine

Games installed;
Theme hospital
Transport Tycoon
Star trek voyager - Elite force
GTA (1)
Kingpin
Thief gold
Return to castle wolfenstein
Project IGI
Star Wars - Dark forces
Skyroads
Toca Touring cars

Software;
Letter Assigner
Nero 7

Games actually played for more than 10 mins each;
Pinball dreams
Motoracer
Arcade Pool 2

Great selection of games there, I installed elite force as I absolutely love that game, sadly the P1 isn't up to that kind of beating so that's a no go......but also a very good reason to build a 754/939 box. Silver linings and all that.

Pinball dreams is one of my favourite games ever along with pinball fantasies. Have a work playlist featuring the themes of both games, just awesome!

My lad has really embraced the retro system and we spent ages playing pro pinball and need for speed 3 yesterday. Even sat and explained to him what a floppy disk was and left him run through making a 98 boot disk lol.....the look of confusion in his face when I held a cd in one hand and 3.5" disk in the other and explained this is nearly 700 of them :D

so......who can say they have already royally trashed a W98 installation this morning? Just me? OK lol

In good news, got the proper yamaha driver installed and working in DOS. Bad news, I ran the DOS installer in windows by accident and what looks like corrupted the System.ini

lol. I've had to format twice already due to conflicts and VFAT BYODs. Doesnt matter, just dont keep anything important on it

I played a bit of Elite force, its runs on the Quake III engine so plays quite well on a Voodoo 3. Quake III timedemo (demo 001) I get 53fps on highest settings, 800 x 600 which is fine for my small LCD screen.
Many hours were spent on Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Illusions on my Amiga in the early 90s.

Epic Pinball is also a fantastic game and a newer one 'Pro Pinball: Big Race USA' Is that what you meant by Pro pinball? ..."TAXI" :D

I did have Need for speed 3 but it always felt like a much slower paced game than Need for Speed 2SE. I liked the cops aspect but NFS2SE seems faster and more arcade like

edit - This just arrived. Not seen one of these since I was ~14

That joystick is amazing. On my wanted listed!

Reinstall now complete and DOS sound is working brilliantly. Epic Pinball sounds exactly as it should which is awesome :)

Yeah big race USA was the one we were playing lol. Great table!

Next stop is Pinball Fantasies but for some reason it just keeps saying it cant find a sound card which is a bit annoying :(

I think I may have one still, and even may have the force feedback one (but sans power supply). I really need to properly sort out my attic.
I definitely do have a Sidewinder Gamepad, as I came across that the other day.

So, im thinking the IDE to SATA SSD route might not be great. Windows is acting strange. Some apps will load, games wont, double click nothing happens., Start button doesnt work nor do any apps in the taskbar. wont shut down either.

Did anyone say they were running a usb 2.0 card in 98?

Managed to pick up an NEC based unit that is coming Wednesday. I swear I read that the NEC based units were better somewhere on vogons??

You can do it but some people I have seen have some problems with entire PC performance with some chipset/usb combos alongside other conflicts

Fair enough I will keep hold of it for the xp build

Currently deciding whether to get a 754 or 939 board and chip. The temptation is big for 754 purely so I can put my 9800 pro in it

If you have a 9800pro it is the law that you must make a build around it!
I had only a 9700pro way back when but very fond memories of it before it died suddenly while playing Lineage 2

I do on Win98 SE. '5 Port Belkin F5U220qjLI USB 2.0 PCI Card 4 External 1 Internal NEC Chipset'
It does cause issues like IRQ conflicts (apparently no conflicts, but there are) so I disable it in device manager after transferring what I need.

Issues including but not limited to. VFAT BSOD, Soundcard not detected, system freeze, Video card errors, USB mouse stopped working, PS2 mouse stopped working, DOS apps/games do not launch

In short, USB2 was never designed for use in Windows 9X, nor were SATA drives. So its like wacking a round peg into a square circle - It might fit but be a bit broken!

USB 2 however is at least 10x faster than USB 1.1 so its worth enabling, transfering the odd GB then disabling it again

Yeah I can't help thinking myself that an AGP build is more fun than a PCIe based one. There was a MSI board and Sempron 3000 bundle on the bay for £8.89 buy it now, gone stuff it and picked it up.

Just located 2x1gb DDR400 to go in it from the spares box along with a Soundblaster Live! PCI + brand new
OEM XP licence pack.

My card is a Medion 9800XXL with a Zalman flower cooler fitted..

Seriously happy right now, there was a card I had years ago which was a strange anomaly budget Radeon 9550 card by ABIT called the R9550-Guru. Was dual BIOS card (9550-9600xt) with massive cooling for the time that enabled it to clock like a monster.
Info at the time - Cebit 2005 - Day 3 Review | TechPowerUp

I have searched for one again for maybe 10 years on and off and they seem to be pretty rare to catch one for sale. Got one last night! £10 offer accepted :)

Sure, won't be the fastest card ever but to have one in my collection again is brilliant!
