What retro things have you done today?

What VGA card are you using? I'll take a look at my config later on today. If I'm honest, I only use it in pure dos. I don't really run any of the games in a DOS window, so I don't know if that will have any effect on how the util works.
Voodoo 3 3000G (16MB)
Thanks. Out of interest, why are there differing Khz for the same resolution? E.g Windows games 61.8Khz, some okder games running VESA 2.0 are 31.4Khz

Using unirefrsh in DOS I have my monitor configure to run at 120hz for 640x480 (I think it will actually run at 160hz). Oh and after you have Unirfesh configured, put a line in your autoexec to load it at boot.

I've not tested it inside a dos window (I just have a thing about using DOS games, in dos). What older games are you testing with? I can try and test it too, to see if I get the same behaviour.

So success story this morning if anyone runs into the same problems.

Thought I was doing a full reinstall of windows but I didn't format first just thinking W10 will do it lol. so it loaded back in with all my icons on desktop and drivers still installed BUT. Direct X was back at 6.1a and no DX drivers were old or missing. sound all now works again!!!!! WOOHOO!

That was pretty painless :D

It's switching it to 61.8Khz there is see (instead of using the default 31.4Khz)
DOS noob here, how do I run anything once Unirfesh is running? Launching it shows 'loaded successfully' and the MS windows popup program support then a blink cursor. Nothing can be typed at this point. Do you need to load it with a command line switch or something or launch a game with a switch?

At the moment Im just trying Duke nukem 3d, Blood and Doom

So few good things this morning

The moment you remember the desk you were given for WFH has a cd rack in it!

Dell 4:3 set up in office for the MMX :)

And whilst my boss was clearing out the old building we just moved from, found me this. Pretty darn cool!

Well today got interesting. I bought an Elgato HD Pro capture card on eBay second hand for £67 the other day, it arrived today and bunged it into my backup PC (2600X - remember when these were about £100? on an A320 board) installed the drivers and it actually works flawlessly.

I've bought a few cheapo unbranded capture cards over the years and they've not worked very well at all so it was refreshing that this actually worked and has live drivers.

Not only that but it will capture all sorts of random resolutions using my MX4s DVI output. I was planning on getting a VGA to HDMI scaler thing, itself an expensive proposition, but it works fine showing all the post screens and w98 splash screens, all the DOS games I've tried.

Now there is nothing stopping me from becoming Fat Game Reviews or whatever (except my own bone idleness)

Edit - except working out how to output digital audio on my SBLive and setting up a device to capture digital audio as there is a lot of noise going on

Recorded some stuff on an external Midi module today. Module in question is the pretty unknown Kawai GMega LX XC-3. I don't know what to think about this module. I like the how the percussion sounds, but some of the other sound are a bit weak and it doesn't seem too balanced. Lots of reverb on it also but I'm not sure if that's been applied by a previous owner as after I recorded the songs, I tracked down the manual to see it has battery backup to save custom settings.

Anyways, I uploaded At Doom's Gate and Descent.

Got a sizeable bonus from work today so decided to put in an offer on the £75 Kyro 4000XT PCI that was on eBay. £50 seemed to be enough. Yes that’s more than double the AGP version, but they are rarer and PCI variants of GPUs always command a premium for some reason.

Congrats on the bonus and good spending indeed!

For some reason after posting fine to test it a few days back my x800 ago is now dead as a dodo :(. No clues as to why, all looks nice and clean and nothing missing.......typical!

Tried it in another board? Odd for something to just stop working like that.

Yeah tried it in my Athlon system too. Seems like it's not getting power upon boot. Wondering if maybe the solder point has broken or something? It's getting on I suppose.

My 6600gt is running great guns in the same machine and using the same sata/molex converter cable

I got mine working now, just had to run it in DOS to get it to load then launch another program / game.

Did you ever get it working for Doom / Doom 2 as this used mode 13h which doesnt seem to be listed in Unirfrsh?

Do you have a multimeter to be able to test it? Could be an easy fix!

Never messed with the 13h mode. I think its 70hz for a reason. Original doom is programmed around this if I remember correctly, or the engine is capped at 35fps which is half the refresh rate.

Not at home annoyingly no :(

Hoping it might be, not really my forte mind you. You got any thoughts :)
Are all the caps looking good? Any bulging? It’s more than possible that using such an old card has killed a cap. I’d probably also look for any damage to the PCB itself as well as for any dry/cracked solder joints.

Are there any signs of life at all? If you boot with another card present as well, can you see the dead one in device manager, or in DOS can a BIOS flash util see the dead card?

So annoyingly as per the voodoo, the card itself looks immaculate! Can't see any broken caps etc. From a check over yesterday. The molex connector is stupidly tight so had a thought that maybe the solder joints on the power block are cracked. My brother is an electrician so going to ask him if I can nab his multimeter at the weekend, seems a good idea to check pin to solder point and check if power is actually getting through.

Having bad thoughts about trying to get a 6800 or x1950 agp now though. Really wanted one or the other for ages but always been crazy ££

Yeh, you're right. I read yesterday 13h modes were specifically programmed to be used with 70Hz on VGA monitors. Im sure it could be overridden somehow but would change the game/program
