What retro things have you done today?

Oh wow. Ill leave it then. Especially at that price. I have no use for anything older than a 486 just like the idea of tinkering and bringing it back to life.
I can appreciate that, the reason I bought it was simply that my father was an Olivetti employee and all my childhood machines were various Olivettis, so they hold an emotional soft-spot for me.

I needed one, to re-create my Celeron 2 600@900 Abit BX6-Rev2 system.. I've now got 7 of them, one is boxed too :D
All three of these slockets are packaged I believe, we shall see when they arrive!

In other news I found that my old PCIe XFC Geforce 6800GT has an almost identical board layout to my XFX AGP 6800 and had a much better cooler (the PCIe card has RAM heatsinks for starters!) So I rebuilt both cards with the opposite coolers as I doubt I’ll be using the PCIe variant any time soon!

I'm tempted by this...

I've not messed with 486 stuff yet and I think its my next step. I've got more RAM I can put in. I've also got a soldering iron now to take that battery off pronto!

The alternative is this...

That first one has corrosion all the way down to the winbond chip! Could be a risky one especially at asking price.

I actually had the 2nd one on watch. Although I need to finish the projects I have already :D

I wonder how low they would accept on the make offer.

I've got an "early" 75MHz AMD Socket 7 CPU (is there any chance that will work if the mobo supports 5, 4, 3.45, 3.3v CPUs?)

If not I'd be looking at 50 or 66MHz. I don't really know much about this era of CPUs I've got Slot 1 for faster and a 386 for slower. Although by that definition this entire build is pointless!

My Gainward Geforce 7900GS AGP 512MB arrived. Looks like the cooler has never even been taken off as the warranty sticker is intact. There's a spot of rust on one of the cooler screws, and a bit more on the legs of one capacitor, no liquid damage corrosion though so I can only assume it's been stored somewhere damp as opposed to seen liquid when powered on.

Well today just got a bit more Interesting - found a "sound blaster" new unused in box just down the road from me on Gumtree. £10. From the photo of the box it says Supports Windows 3.1 so I'm intruiged as is the follow up to the original soundblaster. It's a 3 minute walk from my house too. Hopefully they have loads of stuff like this :D

Nice find man!!
Such a buzz when you find local bargains like that.

Pics will be required once picked up ;)

So what have I got...

Here's the advert I saw whilst browsing Gumtree and eBay for 486 stuff working hard at work, and I suddenly arose from my excel-induced stupor.

Good condition box.

It's a Soundblaster 2.0 CT1350B. It's in absolutely mint condition and the antistatic bag was still very sealed. It's got the FM synthesis chip included, but no CMS chips (empty slots for those). I've always liked CMS music so I must track some down!

Driver disks. I don't actually use normal floppy drives anymore but I think my current XP PC, my i7 860 does actually have a floppy header so I might extract all the drivers. It also came with two Text to Speech software disks.

Not quite untouched as the lemmings and Indi 500 games have been pinched. The card was to go in one of their child's PCs, but never did, so likely that Lemmings got used!

I think it would now be a criminal offence to not build a 486 PC!

The guy has just started doing a loft clearance, and as he is literally 3 minutes' walk from me he took my number as he thinks he has a few more bits up there.

Well it is only day 10 :p

CMS audio chips SA10099 or something are still produced and a pair can be had for £10. The GAL control chips are £6. My board is one of the more compatible ones as it has the original CT1336 not the -A version.

I Think I'll double check the chips will work and go ahead!

Great find! I think they have GAL's that also work with the CT1336A now, but you will have no problem with the CMS upgrade on that card! I recently sold a boxed OEM version of this card for £150, you could say that's a good investment if you decide to move it on!

In regards to the 486 PC, they are nice to have a play with, but really you can do everything a 486 can do on a Pentium but just better.

I have this board and its a pretty decent board and have built a setup around it but, soon dismantled it as i was doing everything on my pentium rig.
