What retro things have you done today?

I have been thinking lately about building the ultimate XP machine using period correct parts. Its the best time to do it while parts are still cheap but for now I'm sorting out some dual core machines.

My dream xp box is up and running now. Done a solid few runs in 3dm06. Not 100% sure if sli is performing but it is enabled and doing something. Seems to be 1100 extra points in 06....doest seem a lot of is that just the benchmark not really liking dual card setup?

I think I already have the parts to do it, I have a few spare boards with dual core processors, plenty of DDR2 Ram and other bits I will just need to get a good GPU and Power Supply.

For something a bit more retro. I raided my local Cash Converters and they had some boxed keyboards and mice in there bargain bin. The TIME Mouse was 25p and the old keyboards where a fiver plus another mouse inside. The multimedia keyboard will look fantastic with my Windows 2000 PC. I already had an AST boxed keyboard and now I have another.

Who would have thought they would be lurking in cash converters! Awesome

I will keep you posted on the GPU front as may have a few AGP ones I am going to sell soon on MM as long as my new purchases work, Will flag it up if I put them on there :)

Thanks. I was thinking about something from 2010 PCI :)

That's a beautiful case, as XP as it gets.I whish I had that case back in the day..
My ultimate XP machine is my testing rig, the ASROCK 4CORE Dual and for now a GTX 570 2.5GB. I can max out the resolution on the CRT monitor, like 1600x1200. Less PC cases in the room too. My ultimate XP card I consider to be the 8800 GTX, but everyone has different opinions.

my retro machine really is proving itself to be annoying. I was listening to some MIDIs on it when it hard locked and the cd drive light was blinking(MIDIs were not on CD..). After a power cycle it was still doing it. For no reason at all I decided to give it a firm tap and it stopped doing it and booted as normal..

That's part of all vintage machines of the past.
Give them a good wack with your fist and they start working again or stop making loud grinding noises. It was a daily thing with some of my older PCs, even the Amiga liked a good wack every now and again to get the floppy drive reading disks again :D
Probably the mechanical disk drives needed a push along and fans slightly moving to stop making the grinding noises

Ah yes, its just alongside the other problem this machine has been having its really becoming not reliable and therefore not enjoyable to have as my "main" machine.

Considering getting my windows 95 pc out instead although I am not sure how well that would play with a USB mouse.

Pcie?

7850 1gb be too new? Have one of them that might end up on MM too in next day or 2
PCI-E. I have a MSI 1GB GPU that I assumed would be ok for a dual core 2 Windows XP system. I've had it for a long time but never used it. Maybe its more Windows 7 era but XP was still in use at the time which made me think its practically still period correct for 2010 or maybe 2012 which isn't much difference.

Sounds like you have the same grade of multiple boxes of stuff i have laying about lol

Tried to play a game (Theme hospital) on my retro rig and the pc started acting up as soon as the cd was in. Followed by not reacting at all when trying to open the cd drive in "My computer". Hope its just the drive at fault as I have about 10 spares :D

Just change the optical drive and have done with it. You can repair old optical drives if there isn't to much wrong with them sometimes the rails just need cleaning and re-greased and a bit of IPA to clean the laser with a cotton swab. Sometimes they need belts changing you can get more a bit more life out of the old belts by soaking them in boiling water from the kettle.
