What retro things have you done today?

I managed to get the bad floppy drive working again... I almost gave up with this floppy drive.

Here is what I did... I do not normally do this with electronics but I had nothing to lose, I filled the bath tub with cold water and swished the floppy drive about quite rigorously in the water. I was thinking about using my ultra sonic cleaner but the drive wouldn't fit so the bath tub had to do. Once I was happy the drive was clean I dried it out in the airing cupboard then I put it in a tub and drowned it with IPA then left it to dry out in the airing cupboard over night. I decided to test it out this morning not expecting much and the floppy drive is fully working... incredible. Now I wont have to order one which could also be tricky because the floppy drive had to be a certain type to fit the case. I can now fit this one back into the machine. Result.

No way I'm paying the going rate for these right now. I love the 3D but sold mine early on. Regret!

I got one of those pokemon X/Y ones in blue. Not sure what model that is it's an XL of some description but not the newest I dont think. I think I paid like £20 for it broken.

I might just sell all my sega stuff as I never use any of it.

I've been having fun with my new Windows ME PC. I finished the build and I've been playing games on it. I couldn't get GTA Vice City to install because it says its missing a cad 3 file which is on disk two and asks me to insert disk two when its already in the drive so I really don't what to do about that, but all other games are working just fine. I'm now installing MS Office 2000 which I think is period correct for the time of Windows ME. I had a bit of trouble with the game pad not working correctly but I think its because the game pad too modern for the OS anyway so I will need to find an older game pad and joystick with drivers.

I'll be moving on to my Windows 95 build very soon.

I think that the startup and shutdown sounds of NT 4.0 work well in Windows ME. I've downloaded the WAV sound files of NT 4.0 and changed the Windows ME startup & shutdown sounds to NT 4.0 sounds.

Just got these two motherboards out to look at... The first board doesn't look too bad with only six bad caps on it to replace and it has a universal AGP slot, it looks like a half decent socket 370 board worth repairing. I have ordered the new capacitors I need.

The second board I'm not so sure about as it needs a lot more replacing of many values and it has no AGP slot... I might still do it... although I've only ordered two types so I can get most of them done at least.

I was just about to make a start on the Windows 95 build and opened the box for the motherboard I won on ebay only to find that its totally dead. I'll be sending that back even though the seller is saying he doesn't accept returns then proceeds to ignore me.

I will have to use one of the socket 370 boards instead once I get the new caps.

Is it dead as in no power, or no post?

No post just CPU fan at full spin. I tried everything with it but no joy.

The socket 370 board that I'm going to re-cap and use actually works out better for the case because the way the PSU goes into the case it blocks the air intake of the CPU fan where as on the socket 370 board the processor is further down.

I'm just wondering what the slowest socket 370 processor is? This PC will be for old DOS games and Windows 95 so I don't want it too fast.

What is the keyboard control to get into a vehicle in GTA Vice City "PC" I have pressed every single key and googled it but can't find my answer.

370 is a bit of a weird socket in my opinion. You can get some nice fast BX S370 boards which has ISA slots for compatibility with ISA sound cards for DOS, but then they move into i810/i815 which majority of boards ditch the ISA slot for PCI. With that you may as well just go Socket 478 with a Pentium 4.
