What retro things have you done today?

Bought a black PS2 controller to gut and transplant the internals into my silver shell because it was being temperamental (and silver controllers go for a premium)

Turns out I couldn't do that because there are two versions... (well, actually FIVE after further research!)

So I delved a bit deeper and tried to replace just the PCB and flexi...

Nope, that didn't fit either...

What about just swapping the cable in case the issue is a break in the cable?

Nope, the colour order of the connector is different.

So then I put them back together as they were, after giving everything a good clean...

Felt quite dejected, but the silver one now works perfectly like there was never anything wrong with it, so I guess it worked out in the end... :p

I noticed afterwards that the black one is a lot creakier and the buttons don't feel quite as substantial to press either. I guess the black one is a much later one. Or just another manufacturer they used at some point along the way that didn't have the same standards.

My console and controller are from the final revision of the "fat" PS2 console. Regarded as the "best" PS2.

Honestly thought they'd be more than that given how long the PS2 was in production for.
I've just bought some bits to replace a stick and mod a Dualsense PS5 controller, and there are already 5 revisions of that

I believe you are right, one source I found said there are five, but from looking at pictures online it looks like there are at least eight!

Anyway have some bonus content. :p

And a correction, this one is actually made by Hosiden, not Hori!

I have the silver ‘fat’ PS2 (two in fact) and it’s a great model. But I have 4 silver controllers (all ‘H’) and the only one that worked was the brand new one I still had in a bag. The others all have various buttons not working. I think the fix is a new flexible PCB but I believe ‘H’ models require de-soldering the 18-pin connector to replace, which is a bit beyond my current skill level and large-tipped iron, most likely. Interested if anyone else had this problem and how they fixed it. I wonder why yours started working again Akagi!

It is the flexible PCB which usually causes issues, or perhaps the carbon contacts wearing out. These two I bought as refurbished with new flexible PCBs installed.

I believe the Hosiden ones do have a soldered ribbon connector, but it might be worth taking the back off the controller to check, since there are so many variants... It wouldn't surprise me if it isn't soldered.

After buying this God knows how long ago I finally fired it up - and it's....great so far.

Apparently I did the right thing going for the PSP version over the PS1.

What sure becomes apparent when you get back into retro gaming is pernickety games and settings!

At the moment my XP PC refuses to play some late nineties' games, legendary games such as Grand Prix 3 and Colin McRae Rally. I don't really remember this issue back in the day, but then, with the advent of 3D cards and Steam it's no surprise as things got a lot simpler. Plus, during the noughties I rarely retro-gamed, in fact between 2002-09 I took a break from gaming, until the likes of Left for Dead and Arma 2 brought me back.

So, the next project is to convert a thin client to a Windows 98 machine to cover DOS and pre-2000 games. :)

Folks what is the cheapest and most effective way of playing PS2 on my CRT TV while displaying the video output in a window on my PC as well?

Its plugged into the TV with a composite to scart adapter.

Off the top of my head, you'd need to split the feed from the PS2 with an RCA splitter. Then use a cheap USB to RCA dongle to feed into your PC and then use one of the free video feed apps (e.g OBS) to view it.

I can't wait to get my extension finished and unload all my retro gear from its hiding holes in cupboards and lofts and things.
I can't actually completely remember what I own anymore... :p

Won a PC for 99p...

Arrived today and the psu makes a bit of a noise when the power is connected so will swap out a known PSU and test the other one in a safer place... Still cant complain for 99p :D

On the one hand, win!
On the other hand, postage was £10, and I probably wouldn't have paid £11 for it if it was local collection. :p

Ha! That may be true but I really wanted that case as its new enough looking that I can fit it in my main pc set up but old enough to still have floppy/dvd bays :D

And now you have me looking on eBay for 'bargains' I don't need.

I was after a replacement PSU for some Altec Lansing speakers I own. The PSU I have heats up, even when the speakers aren't in use. This doesn't seem normal.

Anyway, I found one and jumped down the rabbit hole of what else the seller had for sale. It looks like her engineer father has died and all his electric belongings are up for sale.
