Hi guys,

Sorry for another 'spec me a sat nav' thread but I'm looking to get one for my dad - he isnt too up on gadgets so something easy to use would be a must. Wouldn't need too many fancy features - just simply tell him where he is meant to go and also the inclusion of speed camera locations would be nice. I have been looking at tomtom as they seem the most popular. Are these generally the best to go for? I know garmin is probably the leader of the aviation GPS systems but not sure what they are like for the car ones. Budget is around £200 max. Any suggestions/user experiences welcome.

Thanks

Tom Tom One XL GB £150 at Halfords (least it was last weekend, if its not still on offer you can shop round)

You can then download the additional European maps if you require them at a later date. You can also purchase the traffic module as well. Its about £37 when bought separately if you shop around.

I bought a TomTom ONE last night as a present. £140, and the deal above was still on if you want the XL version.

Very straightforward to use and very reliable. We have one of the original TomTom Go's (what a brick it is compared to the new ones!) and its never let us down.

Thanks for the info folks - I see on some sites that the GB versions all come with ROI maps too - is this usually the case or would I have to get the Europe edition to get maps for Ireland?

Eire is a separate country so yeah you'd need the european edition to get Republic Of Ireland maps.

however, i think the tom tom on-line store may let you purchase and download individual country maps yourself. After all, its just a matter of connecting the tom tom to your PC and dragging and dropping the new maps across.

nice one - thanks for that - think will just go with the GB one - the XL looks like it will do the job. The traffic updates look handy but its probably a bit of a gimmick i guess

if you fancy going into shops and having a try, have a play with the Navman S50, bit cheaper than the Tom Tom and features the same Sifstar III GPS chipset, so should be just as sensitive

Have a play with one, and see what you think. Ive read good things about the new Navmans.

Ok i'll check out the navmans. Do you use one yourself? The S50 is probably the model that would suit my budget best. Like I said its not for me so as long as it is easy to use and gives speed camera warnings then it will be fine for my dad

i have the TomTom 720 europe. its been very good. took us around europe no problam at all. packed with features. now i dont need it im thinking of selling it. Obviously new it is £250 but second hand would be cheaper.

very good system though

ive got a navman, my dad has a tom tom one XL so can recommend both

ive got the new S50, so cant comment specificly on that. But the navman does have a very nice user interface, and comes with free speed camera warnings for the first year. After that its subscription based

not sure about Tom Toms speed camera warnings. but im pretty sure they're not free.

Purchased a tom tom one for the farther in law at the weekend, the sales guys were really trying to push a screen protector on us as they the screen goes faulty without one and isn’t covered under warranty?

Anybody know what they are on about is there a problem with these screens without a protector?

Thanks Dutch

yes i checked out the tomtom speed camera thing and it is like 20quid a year for subscriptions too. Do you have to pay for map updates on the navman too or are they usually free?

Mate just bought the widescreen xl Tom Tom the other day for 150 quid. Perfect.

cheers guys for all the info - think its definitely between these two. Its just hard to decide! I would say that the tomtom is probably more well known make but i wouldn't like to just base my choice on that. If they both have the same gps chipset then i would assume that it is down to the look/feel plus any extra features
