Not asking "is this a scam". Just interested in the scam.

Person messages me asking about expensive item.

They ask where it is (this is listed on item.)
They have a lads profile pic but end messages with an X
Even after this.. I'm like.. Yeah I know this is a scam.

They offer to pay by BT or PayPal (obviously PayPal is a scam)
And a "friend" comes to collect.

I was tempted to see what would happen but couldn't be bothered.

Is it one of those they send a screenshot showing they've paid?
Or would it be a fraudulent/hacked account and bank reverses it?

the guy comes to collect, the person claims [payment was already sent but it wasn't.

they hope your a push over and just hand the item over ,maybe becoming increasingly aggressive trying to wear you down
???

This is what I suspected. Use tactics like "I've paid" and hope I'm a noob/weak of mind.

If the use the pattern you've written, they are always a scammer.

No. 1. everyone bargains on marketplace unless your item is ridiculously low price.

No. 2. they'll probably have some obscure payment method for you to deal with.

No. 3. they'll always say that someone else will collect it, and then ask where it's located. You can see where it's located from Facebook so that question is very revealing.

I tell them to **** off and block them.

That's how I knew immediately.
They asked where it is even though it tells you.

Once I said "cash only" they haven't replied unfortunately.

And yes. Also they didn't barter. It's overpriced on there on purpose to bait scammers. Same as I do on ebay.

Hah. I overprice everything because I know people will low ball you regardless. It works pretty well, though you do have to be a little more patient selling stuff. That being said, most of what I put up doesn't last longer than a week.

I think the part about the 'buyer' showing that he did the bank transfer is just about clear. The part that doesnt make sense is the "nope there was a few of us lads at my house at the time I said go get the cash and come back. He never did scumbags smash his head in"

sounds like you were ready to assault whoever turned up to collect the item

Hmm yeah OK so the scumbag pretending to send money and running off with a 800 pound item is ok

Yup scumbags how.many people must fall for the transfer has been sent. They show you on their phone looks like a banking app very convincing.
Genuine question. How would anyone fall for a 'transfer has been sent'? you would check your bank surely.?

scammer: Sent you the £300, here's screen shot
you: nope, you didnt. Bye.

I know someone who got taken in by it. The person told them it must be held up by the bank, but would clear within 5 days and they 100% believed them and sent £200 back in change

Not sure whether or not to feel sorry for that person or not. Thats pretty much the same as selling something for cash.

scammer: I forgot to withdraw the £300, Ill come back in 5 days with it.

It may be just me, but I can't see how anyone would fall for that. Then again I do see people prying on the elderly and they can be quite forgiving and will fall for silly things. ******* scumbags these scammers.
