What self defence should I learn?

Befriend a *****, become one with their kind, learn their ways

you will soon be a double hard *******

and will learn to sell a few pegs on the side

Let's face it, in a street fight or any brawl, people lash out, fight dirty and just throw as many punches, grabs, kicks as they can. More often than not you'll be outnumbered. The best thing to do is land the first hit hard and run

A friend I went to college with gave me some advice from his years of street brawls. He was a 'reformed' skinhead who still looked very scary. Probably one of the toughest people I've met tbh.

His advice was to either pretend to be sick, as most people wont fight with someone who's going to hurl or to use a tried and tested fighting method.

1. Spit in their face - Natural reaction is to wipe it away.
2. Kick/knee to the balls or head butt to the nose.
3. While they're on the floor (which he said they usually are by now) you give them a hard kick to the kidneys/balls.

at this point if they stay down, job done....

However his next pearl of wisdom was the best. If they look like they're getting up - RUN LIKE ****!!

In all seriousness though, I would say it would be something like boxing, if only to make sure you learn to punch properly.

If you can deliver a sucker-punch without flaw I doubt many would get up from that.

I like to watch MMA, go along to different tournaments, speak to practitioners etc. From what I've seen and been told, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Krav Maga are great all round Martial Arts. Boxing and Muay Thai would be great for striking, whilst something like Judo, Catch Wrestling (which is making a comeback), Jiu-Jitsu etc. might be more useful for grappling and takedowns if that's all you want to learn.

Personally, I would either go for a combination of striking and grappling, or a good all rounder like Krav Maga or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I did want to start Krav Maga, but there aren't any clubs nearby to me. :(

I should have said, I've also seen the above fighting arts being used effectively in street fights not just tournaments. The exception is Catch Wrestling (but it has been used effectively in such situations).

I have been to 2 Aikido lessons, at both I was told how to attack and asked to go slower so I can be defended against, I was asked to fall to the floor during a demonstration of a throw because the throw itself was not doing the job. I am all for judo throws but Aikido is ridiculous.

"punch me, no not like that, no slower, no slow so I can grab your arm and flip you!"

An aikido master Vs a real fighter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxb0PCBV0vk ;)
Well that shows what you learnt, that isn't even aikido.

And you fall/flip to prevent injury to yourself. If you went for no reason at all then shame on your partner.

And I've said it so many times.... all those that say running is the best strategy, put on an old white T-shirt and give a mate a marker pen. Get him to confront you with the marker pen and attack you as he sees fit (stab, slash etc), whilst you run away.

as you said "self defence" rather than martial art, i'd recommend systema, pure defence, for real situations
http://www.youtube.com/user/perten
has some clips of some of the workshops in my area, thought it'd be better to show that rather than the other youtube demos.

other than that, basic fitness, and confidence are generally enough to keep you safe

Definitely Krav Maga. I did it for a while and I'll definitely take it up again when I return to London. It's completely no nonsense but it's also really dangerous. Remember it's self-defence, not kill-someone-when-they-call-you-names. Still, they teach you to be aggressive to a point and from the get-go it's about defending yourself in unarmed situations, situations with multiple opponents, opponents with knives, guns, sticks, etc. And if you have the opportunity, to leg it rather than fight :p

Learn to do Zangief's Spinning Pile Driver Ultra. There is no defence.

On a serious note, Boxing and I also spent a year doing Tai Jutsu which was quite useful in learning some "real world" techniques.

With any martial arts, though, you need to learn how to harness adrenaline and stay focused in a pressured environment. During my training my partner was luckily a friend and we agreed to go full-pressure. Complete swings at eachother heads etc. If you trainer tells you to back down and take it easy, you aren't going to learn so get out of there.

I would personally say Boxing. But, if your being mugged, attacked from behind etc... Which is most often the case these days, none of them are really going to work very well. Also, LOL at the people saying stuff like "Boxing would be no good if you got kicked in the balls, this wouldn't be good if there was more than 2..." You do realise that if you get kicked in the balls, your on the floor, no matter what you specialise in?

i would say most of the training in any self defence is about avoiding problems in the first place. how to be a bit street wise and learning to walk away.

and giving you the confidence that you dont look like a target to start with.

This man is right.

I have been involved in various arts / groups for many years (nearly 13). Martial Arts is really only about giving you the tools. It doesn't really teach you what to do in situations etc, and it's not really a help in a fight unless you are that type of person.

I am quite gobby at times, but im not gobby because I have a few years of training under my belt. Regardless of what I know, I had a good few kickings purely based on - well I got my arse kicked, end of.

But it will lift your confidence sky high. But secondly and properly more important it will give you the sense to be more aware. You will after a few years see situations different, you'll be quicker to think and react. If you can get out, if you can't then sometimes and very rarely use what tools you have to get out. It's only ever about keeping safe. Everything else is for sport.
And that's the fun bit, do a couple of amateur fights (semi or full) doesn't matter. They will make you're ******** tight lol..

IHMO a good modern art is JKD. But learn Wing Chun - most important. It's very flower like.. soft etc. But it makes you very quick and alert. Mix it up, kick boxing for fitness, Ninjutsu is quite interesting for weapon work and defense and some sort of ground work, judo - and the one from Brazil.

imo of course...:)
