Hey all,

My sensor is dirtier than ScarySquirrel on a Friday night when he's drunk and feeling fiesty.

What do you recommend? Idiot proof is preferable :p

Many Thanks
Jake

I use Eclipse and pec-pads. I wouldn't say it idiot proof but very, very easy and gives great results. This is basicaly the solution used by all pros when they need a clean sensor.

Avoid anythign that sprays into the camera/sensor like comrpessed air, thats the main thing. The brush and little blowers may help but I doubt it evers gets all the dirt off, and the poroblem is the dirt will be shifted to the cmera ready to fall back on the sensor.

A friend has some strange electrostatic brush which he claim works 80% as well as eclipse + pec pads, whcih is nice but he still will use the eclipse from time to time.

The only risk with eclipse is if you push reall really hard you could break the sensor but you woul have to be very very clumsy. I've never ehard anyone do this, never seen a report on a forum. One trick to do is to go to a busy camera shop and play with any DSLR withotu a lens on, have a good look inside the body where the sensor is (put mirror up first. The sensor sits in a little tray, a bit like an inner matchbox case.

Ok thanks, which specific eclipse product(s) please?

I know nothing of the subject :) - Many thanks!

Also, if there is dust/dirt on the mirror, is that cleanable? :)

Thanks D.P. :)

Ok, would you mind quickly telling me the process please? :)

Also can the mirror be cleaned? I think theres a bit of dirt on mine :(

Right after a bit more research I'm a little more clued up on the subject!

Still need to dig regarding the mirror though...

Hi there, sorry to slightly hi-jack!!! I too had this problem and used the above items, Eclipse and Pec-pads, worked amazing.

My issue now is through the viewfinder I seem to have a lot of dust/specs, it doesn't affect photos at all seen as its only on the view finder, but is there any good way of getting to this? Its not where you put your eye, its the part in the camera above the sensor :(

I don't want to use a blower as that might just blow it straight onto the mirror/sensor, also I think that's where the Auto-focus LED's are and don't want to damage them either. If I must I can live with it, its just quite an annoyance really.

You can't easily clean the mirror or viewfinder, sent the cmaera in for sevicing.

Cleaning the sensor with pec pads + eclipse is easy.
In an clean room (not too dusty or dirty), with windows and dorrs closed to stop airflow, you need to take the sap from the sealed packet and carefully wrap a pec pad over the end without touching the center of the pec pad with greesy fingers. Practice a few ties first. You can then tape the pec pad over the end, masking tape work well. Put a tiny drop of eclipse fluid on the end (the less the better). Remove the lens form the camera and with the camera switched on (with a full battery) go to the menu and switch the mirror up for cleaning (check manual). Preferably with the camera upside down so dirt falls out of the camera not into the camera, carefully put the swab at 1 end of the ensor and gently slide down to the other end. Remove, put on lens and take a test shot.

No need to rub up and down or anything. If there is still dirt just repeat the prcoess with a new pec pad.

co-incidence? Not really, thats just the way you do it :D

Not something i'd like to try though. Very involved, probably better to send off.

I thought that, especially when I was only being charged £15 by a local place to do my 40D...

Then they wanted £45 to do the 5D2 cos it's full frame I've decided to invest in the stuff myself :p

Well I bought a pack of swabs with Eclipse fluid already loaded up, says its for the 5D sensor so fingers crossed

I'll post my results :)
