Basicly, in the past year i invested in 2x320 .12's from seagate, one turned up dead the other lasted a windows install and 2 hours and emerged with quite an un-easy ticking noise and died that afternoon, sent them back and here i am now thinking what to get.

I popped on earlier about to purchase a "Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS)" however haveing doubts i didnt, anyone got any idea what i should go for?

ultimately i want as much space as i can, i planned to raid the 2 320's but due to what happend i never got around to it.

Can anyone here help me out?

Do you still plan on using RAID - were you going to use 2 WD Blacks or were you just thinking of buying a larger drive and ignoring RAID?

The WD Blacks are good drives - i would get the 650 version as it's only fractionally more expensive (dependent on where you shop) and has the same number of platters (2 i think? so is still as quiet'ish as the 500).

If you're going for RAID 0 have you got a backup drive because if one drive fails you lose everything? (you probably are very aware of this.)

I'd recommend Samsung drives.
Got 4 Raid5'd and never had a problem with them

What drives exactly do you own?
Also.

well my plan was to raid again as today ive spent my little time on searching for 2x320's but thinking that i dont NEED to raid, but out of them both which would come out on top?

aye im aware of one failing that also put me off the idea and what happend first time around with the seagate's did put me off it altogether however a friend coaxed me into the thought :P

noise is another factor, my drivers i have atm make the most noise in my pc, are the blacks quite quiet would you say?
