What should I do?

Ah well, look on the bright side, it wasn't a particually expensive mistake to make, it could have been much worse lol.

As you say, you will be getting two lots of cards so it's not like you've been diddled.

Put it down to experience

Get both of them.... Pain in the ass but atleast you will have all the cards....

If the first company has lots of your cards which are not bought then they may tell people not to use your business.....

Most do quote ex VAT but then normally say, ex VAT.

So (OP) you're cancelling an order because of the VAT. How are you going to get on in business when you run at the first hurdle? You're going to get a lot more serious issues and annoyances than this if this is the field you're going into. Wait until your first invoice doesn't get paid, or someone blames you for loosing their data, or an upgrade you install goes belly up etc.. I would seriously consider your next move.

but then again...
from OPs point of view, a sample set would normally be made of a flyer, card and poster (or whatever had actually been ordered) so any final tweeks could be made,

Its a little worrying you not knowing that businesses always deal without the VAT on quotes/estimates.

I have spoken to quite a few people about this and every one of them has said that although a quote is more than often excluding VAT they normally make this clear in the quote to begin with.

Why is it "worrying" to you?

One thing that has struck me about this thread is that it has weeded out the genuinely helpful posters from the troll's of the forum and people that post just to create disputes and arguments.

Thanks for the decent advice goes to, unkownsock and TheBigCheese. Ill have a look into the FSB.

Lowest trick in the country this is, quoting prices without VAT when most of their customers are probably not VAT registered.

You must remember that everyone has to learn from somewhere. I love how I have "an ignorance to how business works", like I should have picked this up in everyday life as a student. Not just a lack of experience, as some in this thread seem to recognise. As well as the fact that I am hardly to blame for the situation despite me making a few mistakes to exacerbate it, which I now recognise and will not repeat.

I'd pay them if I were you, all prices are quoted ex-VAT, no offence but this is your lack of experience which has caused the problem.

Don't want to annoy you, that's just the way I think it should be.

Okay you paid them, fair enough. Lesson learned. I do agree though, they should have made it obvious it was ex-vat

I can't see a single thing he's said thats wrong in any way let alone many ways.

I can.

Business quotes are always ex-VAT, because many small businesses are VAT-exempt and can claim it back.

1. Business quotes are not always ex VAT.
2. The majority of businesses are not VAT exempt.
3. If they were VAT exempt they couldn't reclaim VAT as they wouldn't have paid it in the first place.

As already posted I have paid for the cards, but I still think that although a quote is provided ex vat it should state that and not be assumed.

Live and Learn I guess.

An OcUK competitor used to only list ex-VAT prices, and given that they're selling to consumers not the trade I thought it was pretty sneaky.

But business to business? Of course VAT won't be included! Though you would expect somewhere on a quote for it not say that it's excluding VAT and VAT will be added at the current rate.

Never saw this mentioned, but when I order business cards for the guys here, we always get sent a proof to check over in case there is any changes we need made, or any mistakes before they go ahead and do a print run, did you receive a proof?

You are dealing business to business - all prices quoted will be exclusive of VAT.

Pay them.

This, always assume prices are exc. VAT unless stated that the price includes VAT.

i would never assume VAT was already included - it never is unless stated

that's not really the issue though, the issue is whether you confirmed the order but sending your artwork after a quote is pretty much that arguably

Not very professional on their part and a bit naive on yours.

I got some marketing materials printed last week and they sent quote, I sent artwork, they then sent proof, I agreed, they sent invoice, I paid. That's how it should be.

How much are you quibbling about here? 15% of what?
