Your machine is very capable of running BF4. My machine is lower spec and can run it at 1080p. For reference I have
i7 950
8GB 1600Mhz RAM
Nvidia 460GTX
Not sure what settings I run it at without checking but it looks nice and runs without slow down.
My friend has an old AMD processor (8 core but can't remember which), 8GB RAM. He had a ATI 6950 in his machine and it ran ok. He upgraded to Nvidia 770 GTX and now it runs max everything at 1080p so if you do have to upgrade graphics is the way to go.
*Edit* The game crashes for everyone at some point so if you're seeing crashes it probably isn't your machine
I seem to get Firefox crashes at the same time as well. I've set BF4 to 'high priority' which gave a noticable speed boost. Surely an I5 can cope with other programs at the same time.
I haven't monitored my CPU for temps. I wonder if I might need better cooling or something ?
I also haven't played it in single player yet, so I'll see if that's the same...
A core i5, 8gb ram and a 580. I think if he just used high settings instead of ultra (which he is obviously using for it to be "slow") he would be fine.

I have same ish sort of system with but with a 4gb 770 and when I 1st run BF4 it was running at a silly slow speed but after updating my drivers worked fine but the game is buggy at best atm
