Hey guys, just got back from safari and was planning to get some images blown up to poster size. I was thinking 20" x 30" or 16" x 24". And it just so happens I have some vouchers for a high street camera shop (not sure if I can say who as they are probably a competitor). So Im playing about on their website and I upload a photo to see if it will fit in those demensions and how much cropping etc. Anyway, it says the resolution is too low and the image quality will be degraded. They were taken on my 400D at the highest res (3888 x 2592). I was quite surprised to be given that message, does anyone know what kind of size is reasonable to expect or is this just a message that doesnt mean anything and it will all be fine?

At a picture resolution of 3888 x 2592 (Default High Quality on the 400D) the real world image size is 54" x 36" or 137.16cm x 91.44cm so theres plenty of scope as long as the images are sharp and in focus.

I have printed virtually full size prints at around the size I have mentioned above and they look fine. Also not forgetting you could resterbate some of those images if the fancy take you: http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/ ;)

Can I ask how you worked that out or is it just something you know?

One is of a sunset where the ISO has turned itself down and the image is a little blurry but I think it'll be ok.

Simple mate, Open in Adobe photoshop, go to image size then change the pixel to inch or centimetre etc. :D Sounds too easy to be true but it has worked for me many times. (Photographer)

I've printed photos from a Canon 10D (6mp) at 30"x20" and the quality was good from arms length. You'll be fine :)

Im a little annoyed I didnt think of that myself, seems so obvious.

SDK, the plan is to hang them in the living room as its a bit bare so I dont think anyone will go in close enough for a pixel by pixel view!

Cheers guys.

That is screen resolution (72 dpi) which is pushing the print quality boundaries.
Ideally you wouldn't want to drop below around 100 DPI. A print of 30"x20 (3888 x 2592) is 130 DPI

30x20" should be fine from a 6MP camera. Howeve,r there are more important issues than the sensor resolution such as exposure noise, lens sharpness etc.

Well too late now, they are being processed! Will report back on Tuesday when I go to collect them. I did purposely choose the sharpest images for fear of wasting my money!

Please let us know as I'm just back from Safari this week and considering large prints also.
Your thoughts would be appreciated on the print quality as well.

Can I ask how much you've spent on getting a photo blown up and printed at 30x20" ??

I've got a few I'd like to do this with so I'm intrested in the outcome.

:)
