What software do I need to check my Line noise etc?

Depends what you're looking for and what on.

To get SNR margin, attenuation et al on most routers, all you need is Internet Explorer/Firefox/Opera/Safari/lynx/whatever. Just stick the router's IP into your browser and it should all be there.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm

That guide should cover you for most modem/routers. You should be looking at Attenuation, SNR and sync speed

Should look something like this:
Downstream Rate: 4832 kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 kbps
Channel: Interleaved
Current Noise Margin: 15.0 dB (Downstream) 23.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 44.6 dB (Downstream) 21.5 dB (Upstream)
Current Output Power: 19.8 dBm (Downstream) 12.0 dBm (Upstream)

thanks for your help guys :)

in terms of these 3...how would I know what is good or bad?? the higher the better or lower?

Current Noise Margin: 15.0 dB (Downstream) 23.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 44.6 dB (Downstream) 21.5 dB (Upstream)
Current Output Power: 19.8 dBm (Downstream) 12.0 dBm (Upstream)

cheers :D

The noise margin is the higher the better, if you are on adslmax this figure should be around 6 which will give good speed and stability but can rise like mine did to 15 for extra stability (reducing the sync speed).
It will vary, generally higher during the day at dropping at night.

The attenuation is the loss on the line and should not change, lower is better but the figure will increase the further away you are from the exchange (i am quite far)

As for the output power that again should not change and should be similar to the figure that I get.

More info here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm along with better explanations. Hope its clear, tried to keep it that way.

i really appreciate your guys help! thanks!

I got my results....are these good?

Downstream
Connection Speed 7808 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db
Noise Margin 6 db

Upstream
Connection Speed 832 kbps
Line Attenuation 8 db
Noise Margin 10 db

If they are not what possible action can I take? :(

Thanks :)

Edit: My ISP is Aquiss and I use Netgear DG834G

Those look good, is your line stable?
8128 is the max possible sync rate of adslmax so you are pretty close to it. Are you connecting through an extension? If so (if possible) try connecting the router directly to the master socket and then check the stats, that will show you if you can get a better connection than already!

when people say master socket I never know what they mean? is there one main plug in my house which is the master ? :o :p

Or do you mean take all filters out of everything and just have my adsl+filter in socket?

Thanks

Edit: and when checking logs on my netgear it appears to have loss of sincronization sometimes....not that I have ever had a problem when browsing, etc..

The master socket is the one before any extensions are added, you should be able to hunt it down easy enough. Heres a pic
http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/nte5_faceoff.jpg

You can easily take the screws out and the face lifts off revealing the socket behind as you can see, plug the router in there if you can (with the shortest cable possible) and see what type of connection you get.

If it loosing sync does not effect you then its not too much of a problem but its good to have it as stable and as fast as possible (obviously) the first step is to test the master socket and see what results it gives

my god i love this thread :D

my connection syncs have been ******* awful lately im talking 160kbps if i even get a connection. but went on that website whacked in some dodgy settings and now synced at 5600kbps not the highest in the world but will do me ;)

just set the noise margin thing to 5 with the link for the server settings, also set it to adsl2 and seems to have sorted it a treat, still not d/c yet i havent had more then 3 hours for bout 5 days, and its been constantly 4MB :D

think i also turnt Seamless Rate Adaptation off

well with my SKY DG834GT i can use the utility on the this site

only thing is that it was working all night then it conked out on me this morning which has pee'd me off just a little. damn BT idiots

Strange I am doing as below but I cant open the box?

Then exit from the web interface and open a command-line window. Type: telnet 192.168.0.1

You should get a BusyBox welcome message to confirm that your telnet connection is established.

Using vista any ideas? :(

yer i dno my didnt work either, it came up with the stuff and then it told me to log in so i typed in my username, the password line came up but i couldnt input anything?? :/ all i can use was enter which didnt help as then it would complain that the username and password combination were wrong

Pulse fyi! I have just opened my BT Master socket and put the cable going from the router then into a adsl filter into the hidden socket.

booted up pc now my margins have gone to a health 11db down 8db up!!! i know its early lol :p

but maybe could work for u?

Cheers :D

edit: heres a pic nicked from dovey a poster above :o :p

its the socket to the right...
