What software do you find useful on your HTPC

i know with the skin i am using (neon) in settings/video (i think) you can choose to have a menu/window for when there a disc inserted it will play within xbmc.

If you have enough bandwidth xbmc (though good in its own right) is worth it just for icefilms, which is the on-demand service sky promised us years ago but never provided. Anything you want, anytime. Best media utility ever made bar none.

Ok figured that out! Now another issue, when i goto run icefilms or any other app within xbmc i get script errors and it does nothing, anyone else had this?

Windows 7
XBMC with a selection of skins and plug-ins
Sabnzbd+
Sickbeard

With this combo I have shows automatically downloaded and added to my XBMP library pretty much as soon as they are available.

I've actually just moved Sabnzbd+, Sickbeard and my media libary to a storage server so my my HTPC is just running the XBMC front end. My only niggle with XBMC is that the music side of things is a bit clunky.

I installed XBMC but, if im honest i cant see how having it is any easier than just having shortcuts to media on my desktop. Maybe im missing the point.

To me it's all about the presentation and ease of use.

There's nothing betther than being able to sit back on your couch with remote in one hand and a beer in the other browsing through a massive library of movies and tv shows all with cover art, metadata presented how you want it.

Couldnt have put it better myself.

The only problem is when you get a decent collection going and you sit there looking through all your media for longer than it would actually take to watch a film.

OR when you and your partner cannot decide what to watch, end up having an argument about it and turn it off in frustration and end up watching something on normal telly instead

(both true stories)

Excellent :D

Although with kids and a wife, I pretty much don't get to choose any films these days :(

Media browser is set to start charging for its music support. Before i take the plunge and become a paid up user i would like to retry XBMC.
Does anyone out there have experience of MB and XBMC. and what plugins/configurations might get me to a similar solution to Subdued theme, current music plugin, , music, films and tv seasons all with offline metadata, backdrops and posters/artist pictures in folder.jpg and backdrop(x).jpg.
I tried the base XBMC product again and i found it unwieldy, even use of remote was hit and miss, not a good start but i want to persevere.

I use Plex, it's a Mac fork of XBMC. Much easier to configure and use :)

That looks special!!

I'm looking into purchasing a Mac Mini and connecting that to a NAS over Airport Extreme.. so this looks like it could be useful!

How much storage do you guys gernally have in your NAS setups to hold all your content?

I've got a 1tb, 1.5tb and a 2tb drive in my WHS v1 server machine. That sits almost silently in another room, and my HTPC sits almost silently in the living room :)

Mediaportal with streamedMP here too.

With the SAF codec pack they provide on the forums it takes care of pretty much everything.

Ditto, but with ffdshow and Haali splitter, which does most things pretty well. Had the first file it couldn't play the other day in about 2 years of use, so it's pretty comprehensive. Doesn't play Flv, though. Does the SAF pack play flv (as well as taking care of all things ogg, mkv, h.264, etc...)?

programs i have on mine are.......................

XMBC - aeon skin - tv programs/Films+TV Series/Music - generally just use XMBC unless i want a bit more freedom with changing music settings

MediaMonkey - full version - Renaming albums and playback aswel
