What software/tools do you use to maintain the system?

What sort of software/tools do you use not including anti-virus to keep system running smoothly. The other question is what sort of software/tools do you use to get rid of malicious malware and any kind of viruses?

I personally use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO and if I can't delete a virus with this then I usually just do a google search and use what ever is recommended to get rid of that infection.

For removing malware etc. I currently use a combo of AVG & MBAM. As for the rest of the system I use CCleaner, occasionally use System Ninja. Also use FileASSASSIN for getting rid of the occasional stubborn file and IObit Uninstaller for making sure everything is gone when I get rid of a program.

At home I use Auslogics DiskDefrag on the disk with my files on it, nothing else besides really. At work we use the Microsoft Safety Scanner and the free McAfee tools if anything needs to be scanned for.

scheduled windows defrag, comodo security with malwarebytes in reserve and a tight rein on whats running at any given time.

still doesnt make me entirely immune from the windows slowdown though

For malware removal (my work toolkit) :-

Malwarebytes Anti-malware
Hitman Pro
Adwcleaner
Combofix

Then less used malware tools

SuperAntispyware
Various antivirus live cd's from drweb, kaspersky, avira, bitdefender)


For repairing damage done by malware:-

Dial a fix (for xp machines)
Revo uninstaller
Sysinternals suite
Windows all in one repair

Lots more used in very specific situations but those are my go to tools that sort most issues.

All you need are 3 things to keep system running smoothly

1) a good anti virus. Nod32 Imho
2) malware protection, malwarebyte is the best.
3) all around good pc cleaner. Ccleaner

Everything else is blot ware

I would agree if we were talking about Linux, but windows I have to disagree as I've only just moved to windows 7 from Windows 8.1 Pro. Because it was terriable and got unstable after 3 weeks... where my previous install of windows 7 Ultimate lasted me 2 years.

Some of the tools listed I remember using but I just forgot the name.

P.s. What do you people use specifically to scan the PC for viruses? I've Malwarebytes Premium and so far this Anti Virus seems IMO the best.

I've had 8.1 installed since release, using built in AV/malware with the occassional run of malwarebytes but common sense and not spending time surfing torrent/warez/porn sites tends to mean I don't have any worries anyway.

The chances are you had a dodgy device driver, hardly Windows 8.1 fault there really.

If I repair my daughters PC, or any of my family for that matter due to a virus or spyware/malware, I always remove files, services and registry entries manually myself in safe mode, I will use an antivirus and Ccleaner afterwards to make sure it has gone, and they always are.
Just my prefered method.
As for myself, I haven't even checked for any thing since moving to Linux.

Usually the issues with Windows on 'new' pc's is the 3rd party crap that HP / Dell / everyone bundles in with their 'clean' installs.

Crappy progrmas hooking into Explorer and startup trash, they just cause instability and odd behaviour.

Start off with a vanilla Windows install (plus drivers) and it flies.

Really down to users skill level IMHO, for example System Ninja is great at removing old Firefox profiles that other software leaves behind ie CCleaner, so being a Firefox user myself its handy,also got 1GB of HD space back from old leftover crap so that is not to be sneezed at if you know what you are doing.

Even Microsoft can leave old invalid files after updates,I've been doing it this way for many years without issues on more then one PC I own ,with Linux I just leave it to do its thing however.

For AV I've recently moved from MSE over to Bitdefender.

Never use anything for maintenance just Malwarebytes and CCleaner should anything seem askew.
