what sort of car is good with a new baby?

Wow, I would have thought they would throw in a tank due to it being a new car, and not a cheap one at that.

Even if they do it'll still be itemised as such on the invoice as it's a fundamental part of the RRP price. You'll note that on that invoice there is £1500 of discount on the car - if they'd chucked in a 'tank of fuel' its value would be included within that.

I think the point is you can manage with a small car, there's plenty of young single mums who manage with a 3 door Corsa but when you're in the position to afford the correct tool for the job get something big enough.

It's like you can get by with a 640x480 monitor or just a mouse and an on screen keyboard but stuff is a lot easier and more enjoyable at 1080p and with a proper keyboard!

There are also things more enjoyable when not driving a van. :)

I will throw in my 2p worth. It will seem like overkill but a Citroen Grand Picasso. You will not need the seven seats at this stage but usually where there is one child, there be two or three soon after ;)

However, the boot space with the seats down is impressive. But the best thing is that you can fit three car seats abreast which we cannot even do in a 5 series. There is also a lot of extremely practical features too. I miss ours which was written off when a man who probably did not know who his father was drove into the side and hit every panel.

We bought a 5 series and I still would take the Citroen. Sad I know but I daresay you could have both a Citroen (relatively cheap to buy and run) and a more sporty drive for the weekends

Wow, the sarcasm is strong in this thread. Sure, you can have a family of 5 in a Lupo but it doesn't mean you have to.

Having a big car just makes life EASIER. As many have said, the new rear-facing car seats are HUGE and some people like MASSIVE prams as the kid can lie flat, rather than have excess pressure on the hips like they do in a traditional carry cot.

My car allowed me to put in a gargantuan Emmaljunga in the boot, wheels next to bassinet, without having to fold anything other than the chassis. Also had room for bags and whatnot. Sod trying that in anything smaller.

Christ.

I managed in a Fiesta with a newborn and that was with a decent size pram and a bag of stuff.

Was it ideal? No
Do you need a massive car? No

People will scoff at the fact parents buy biggish cars when they have a sprog or 2, but sadly, car seats are huge now, as are prams and women forget logic when they pack for children. We have 2 girls, 4 and 5, and its only now that we travel a little bit lighter, my A4 Avant was soon filled up when they were younger.

Just as i was contemplating going back to a nice saloon, we have child no 3 appearing in a few months, but at least the XC60 i have now will accommodate 3 child seats in the back quite easily.

Hi mate, interesting you have an XC60...something that was hiden under my radar until a week or so ago.

How are you finding it? Interesting you can fit 3 child seats across the back...does this make it quite easy for an adult to sit in between if necessary?

Absolutely this 100%.

As I have mentioned above next year I will be handing my Superb back and we will be left with the Qashqai. Whilst it will be ok and we could get by, it will make our lives that bit more difficult compared to the Superb on family days out...but if you have the option of a bigger car it will without a doubt make things so much easier.

We have friends with the same style pushchair as us...in the Superb we can chuck everything in the boot, get my daughter clicked in we get strapped in and engine going whilst they are still loading the boot and getting their hands filthy having to remove the wheels muddy wheels off the pram to fit in their boot. This is just one example!

We managed okay with a e90 330d when my first son was born. It was a pain to get stuff in the boot and the rear facing car seat restricted front passenger leg room. We changed to a Volvo XC70. Despite its large size, rear legroom wasn’t great and now with 2 rear facing car seats in the back it was becoming a pain. Also, with 2 kids when we had visitors, there was no room in the car for them. So we changed again.

Requirements were 6/7 seats, large boot and not a traditional MPV or van. Ended up with a Mercedes R class which is absolutely huge and we love it. Can chuck 6 people (2 in extended rear facing car seats for safety) pram, bags and all our usual stuff in with absolutely no drama. No need to play Tetris every time. It’s also quite a smooth drive.

My wife, who will hate me for saying this, hasn’t really shrunk back down after 2 kids, can sit in between our 2 high back booster seats in the back with no issues. Its a tad wider than the current superb I found. It was the best small SUV I found for this application. Better than Q5 and xtrail,A6 avant in this regard.

I’ve had 2 HBB and a normal child seat fits well using the belts.
