Prime Minister Tony Blair has responded personally via email to 28,000 online petitioners opposing the UK's planned identity card scheme, and has closed the online petition.

Not long ago it was on the news that they just wanted to 'discuss' the issue of vehicle monitoring after seeing the huge response of the petition calling for it to be scrapped outright, as if that isn't a bit of a **** take, now Tony himself has just gone and closed a very important petition on id cards that im sure given time would have had just as many signatures, i find it disgusting how the government can merrily go on with its plans while simply ignoring the people.

It's not like these ideas are your average government pap, this is simply a huge invasion of privacy and not just that, we know its wrong and could turn out quite sinister, governments should never get too much power and control, we need to keep them in check and say NO collectively to the way they are leading the country and our future.

Oh ffs don't be stupid.

He didn't close it at all.

Rather than spoon feed you the truth I suggest you engage brain and read, first - anything but slashdot.

doesnt make any difference, theres not going to be any ID card in my pocket or tracker in my car - and thats that

if 51% of the population shared my attitude and actually voiced it then neither would happen

edit - how can /. say that? its clear that the petition ended normally on the 15th

I know he didn't personally close it, what sort of comment is that, contributes nothing of value, but anyway the issues are still there whether you like to acknowledge them or not, but who do you think you are calling me stupid? well you've shown just what sort of person you are.

I think of more concern is the large volume of signatures against the "Pay as you drive" scheme. Despite huge concerns about the "Big Brother" implications and also the cost to the public in getting the black boxes fitted, it seems Bliar is intent on steamrollering his idea through.

Please tell me that the British public hasn't become so apathetic that they will allow this stupid scheme to go through. Enough is enough - it penalises the legitimate, law abiding section of the public. There will still be those who will drive without a registered car/licence/insurance.

If you were aware that Mr. B didn't close it why post an incorrect quote.

Just to stir up some unnecessary controversy perhaps?

He means you've got to be stupid to give a knee-jerk reaction like "What sort of government is this!??!?" to an article like that.

Have your rolleyes back and stop being so defensive

He quite clearly wasn't aware, and it just defending his point.

I know he didn't or its at least highly unlikely he got on a computer and closed the petition himself  , but going by the news article he had a part in it and even wrote a letter and emailed it everyone who signed, anyway why are you getting at me? the issues are what matter not the minor details or possible errors of my posts.

Just to stir up some unnecessary controversy perhaps?

I hardly need to do that. :p

No its not a knee jerk reaction when issues like this have been going on for ages and im sure many would more than agree, so no i won't have my rolleyes  back, his post come off as arrogant and insulting to say the least and does nothing but belittle the issue, which is odd as it goes against the grain.

Yeah, tyrannous government. Time for a full-scale revolution, I think.

Do i attract these kind of belittling posters? :p

Predictable and boring. An attempt to go to one extreme to twist and take some sort of value out of an issue, well done! have a cookie. :)

Ok, have fun wasting your own time :)

This government is not the sort you think it is.

This is why we can't vote for everything (no it's not because they want to rule us like slaves) and they do not use terror to manipulate us.

It's not an extreme twist though is it? The whole point of your thread revolved around the anger of Tony closing the petition at his own discretion.

When — as people have rightly pointed out — if you actually read the article, the petition was closed because the deadline simply ran out. So the thread means nothing.

the point is that is wasnt closed by anyone, it was closed because the petition was set with an expiry date, and that date has passed
