what ssd is better and why?

Well i just got an intel 80gb, no frame of reference on the Vertex. With 74gb of space to play with, windows and apps will take up 30gb and leaves me 40+ to install my 2-3 favourite games on. I wouldnt want the vertex as 60gb, less 15 for windows, less 5 for format leaves you 40gb, and if the speeds are even comparable I would pan for the bigger size due to convenience. Few seconds here and there make no difference to an hour trying to figure our how to rearrange things and transferring them.

This is based on what you need it for though.

Having said that, if you are considering jumping aboard the ssd boat for the first time, I have yet to see it load games but performance elsewhere, whilst a lot snappier, isnt out of this world- a cut above definitely, but not different league- note this is coming off an old school 500gb wd not raided.

The Intel is the better SSD, whether it will be better for you is another question.

Do you need 80 GB or 60GB ?

80 would be better as for windows and adobe and few apps or games, but i could use the 60 or 80.

Since the Intel one is quicker it will be the one i'll order.

Thanks Guys

Yeah, I use the Adobe Suite, MS Office, Netbeans, Visual Studio along with lots of other common programs like MSN and I still have 37 GB free on my system drive.

For games, I purchased 2 more for a RAID 0 setup because I'm slightly mad :p

Anyway, Good choice ;)

lol you nutter!! my plan is what you use yours for msn, adobe suite, office etc and install files on my 500gb (later to raid 0) and keep my 2TB drives for work, movies, music etc.

do you know what roughly your start up speed is? and what windows do you use? 7?

On the intel I know roughly same amout of time with the please wait icon (probably 5 secs less but you dont notice) but once it flicks onto your desktop you can open anything instantly, no backlog.

thanks el Kuarlos, I cant wait to hook it all up, as will be my first ssd and my first crossfire setup (getting another 5850).

Aye aye I am :D. I use that RAID 0 for Games, my other SSD for Windows and 3 other drives for my videos, tv shows and general backup of documents.

My start up time is around 20 seconds I think, but that's because of the AHCI driver screen or whatever it is (something related to hard drives), once it gets past the Windows 7 logo, the desktop appears instantly and you're able to do whatever.

Doesn't really bother me, I leave my PC on.

this ssd what should I do for it? turn ahci on in the bios? anything else? sorry for sounding an idot lol i never used a ssd or seen one just heard there quick and good lol.

The steps I took are such:

1. Ensure SATA is set for AHCI
2. Check that you have the latest firmware for the SSD drive, i.e. boot from Intel created disc http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...&DwnldID=18363
3. Install WIN 7
4. Install M/B drivers - do not, however, install intel chipset driver
5. Install other drivers
6. Go to device manager, open IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller and check that the SATA controller is using the "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller". This will ensure that TRIM works and then your system is set and forget - no need to install the Intel toolbox

I'm inclined to recommend the intel drivers, they really do offer a decent performance boost over the default windows 7 drivers

how does trim n that work? do u turn on or? and install intel drivers you use the update disk?
