What storage set-up to use?

I'm planning on building a gaming rig in the coming month or two and am decided on most components other than my storage options.

I'm quite tight on the money i can spend, but am considering up to £150 max but really want to keep the cost as low as possible.

With no prior experience i don't know which option is better, be it:

  • HDD - 7200rpm 1TB, Slow, Large capacity and Cheap (£50-£60)
  • SSD - 250GB, Fast, Low capacity and expensive (£130+)
  • HDD + SSD - Windows and a few games on SSD (60GB), Other files on HDD(1TB) (£110+)
  • HDD + SSD using Intel SRT caching, 60GB SSD and 1TB HDD (£110+)

Now i'm not a speed freak wanting insane windows boot times and not that bothered about how fast things outside of gaming run as long as they are at a reasonable speed.

With Intel SRT i am worried that for my first build it may be too complicated especially considering i'd be using an OEM install of windows and am worried about incorrect installation and then wiping either disk by accident and having to rebuy windows.

Any advice on whether i really need an SSD or what option is probably best for me is appreciated

Cheers

Could go for a 60gb ssd and a 1tb hdd, then decide on using caching or having windows on the ssd itself

I'm currently running windows on a 60gb corsair force Gt and have a 2tb Samsung f4 for storage hdd

The SRT caching is very straight forward and saves messing about creating folders, permissions on the hdd and moving stuff between the ssd and hdd etc.

Just remember to flick the disk controller over to RAID in the bios before installing windows and get the latest intel rapid storage technology package for RAID from either your mobo makers website or from intel. The package also includes a driver package named floppy that you can supply windows with during install when you get to the partition selection for installation.
