What temps should I be getting on this?

Built this rig yesterday:

Athon 64 3400+ (socket 754, with retail AMD heatsink/fan)
Asus K8N motherboard
2x512Mb RAM
Inno3D 6800GT graphics with Zalman cooler
Audigy soundcard
Seagate 7200.10 320Gb drive
Antec TruePower 550w PSU

Cleaned off the heatsink using some Akasa TIM cleaner then applied some AS (the original stuff I had about, not AS5) Hooked it all up out of the case and the BIOS showed the processor at 36C, which I thought was ok. Put it in the case and now the BIOS is showing it at about 60C!

But, in the case I've got 2x21cfm front intake fans, 1x125cfm side intake fan, 1x45cfm rear exhaust fan, and the PSU.

So there should be plenty of airflow in the case. I just can't work out why the cpu is getting so hot. It's not just a reporting problem from the BIOS either as the heatsink is hot to the touch.

Any ideas why it's so hot? Or should it actually run like that?

Thought about that. But what bothers me is that there is so much airflow in the case, yet the temp went up dramatically from running it out of the case.

Also just noticed on the AS instructions it says not to use a citrus based HSF cleaner - but that's exactly what the Akasa stuff is. Would that really make that much of a difference to the temps?

Also, would I need to re-clean the HSF and re-apply the AS or just reseat the HSF? It's a real PITA to do - my least fave PC job!

k, thanks guys. I'll try that and see what happens.

I guess I have to clean it all off again. Really hate applying AS.... :(

Right, done all that.

Took the system apart, removed the heatsink and processor, cleaned them off, reapplied AS (turns out it AS2 I've got, not AS) and rebuilt the system.

No joy. Still hitting 60C. Looks like it'll be hitting about 64-65C at full load from what I've run so far.

Could it be that the AS just needs to "bed in" - or is there something else that could be the problem. What I've noticed is that the BIOS is showing the ambient temps in the case as over 30C, so that's not going to help, but this is just too hot...

Cheers.

What temps is everest (free edition if possible) or asus pc probe telling you when your in windows.

Also is your cpu somehow being overclocked without you noticing? As the only 2 things that would cause temps like this is a perhaps broken hsf (fan might not be working properly on it for some reason or contact is poor or too much thermal paste. 2nd is overclock.

Try and enable cool-n-quiet if possible see if that helps for the mean time.

Could be a broken cpu temp sensor as well or broken motherboard in the cpu area.

SkeepterPSA,

This is a new build, not got any monitoring tools installed yet. Everything is set to stock speeds, no overclocking.

Fan is spinning over 3000rpm per the BIOS, and the HSF is definitely getting hot, so I don't think it's a reporting issue. The HSF and CPU were transplanted straight out of another system which didn't get anywhere near this hot, so I can only think it's the contact between them. I've already re-seated the HSF and now it's down to between 50 and 60C instead of at 60C all the time.

I'll try Everest, but like I say, don't think it's a reporting issue.
